Time has certainly passed between the two games. In the Monster Hunter Stories 2 trailer, Lilia makes her appearance as a Scrivener, that is, a member of a monster research organization in the Monster Hunter world. She’s much older than she was in the first game, where she was a small, energetic child. Now a teenager or young adult, Lilia is alongside Reverto not as your ally per se, but perhaps as quasi-antagonist.

Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin centers around a young Razewing Ratha, which you’ve taken in as a companion. The “Wings of Ruin” part of the title denotes a prophecy in which your scaly friend brings about the end of the world. Lilia and Reverto are there to try and stop it. On top of their interference, you are also being chased by Hunters and Riders who also want the Razewing. It’s sounding like it’s you against the world in the next Monster Hunter Stories.

That’s fricken’ teamwork

Capcom also went into more detail on the combat system of Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin. The game uses turn-based battles, much like your classic JRPG. Strategy is, of course, involved, and includes intelligently utilizing weapon types, skills, and elements along with three attack styles: Power, Speed, and Technical. Like in traditional Monster Hunter games, you can attack and break off certain body parts on monsters. There are also special combined attacks you can use for some impressive damage dealing. Double Attacks and Kinship Attacks use the power of both the Rider and their monster friend for powerful moves.

Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin is on target for a July release on PC.
