While playing through the base game in Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak, I was able to group up with some players. However, switching to the expansion too early meant that there were long stretches when I had to slay beasts on my own. Truth be told, after seeing the same creatures over and over, it really got on my nerves. Thankfully, the expansion does have a quirky new system that should aid you when soloing. Here’s our Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak guide to help you with Follower Quests and Support Surveys with your companions.
Note: We’ll have a Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak guides and features hub soon, so stay tuned.
Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak – Follower Quests, Support Surveys, and Companions guide
The Follower Quests and Support Surveys in Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak get unlocked once you reach Elgado Outpost. Specifically, you’ll need to defeat Thunder Serpent Narwa in the base game’s campaign, and then complete a mission to beat the Daimyo Hermitaur. Doing so leads to a cutscene where you’re introduced to Knight Fiorayne, followed by a trip to the new continent where you’ll meet the rest of the people in Elgado. A short while later, you’re told about this new system.
This allows you to bring AI-controlled companions during hunts. They’ll use items, cast weapon skills, and even mount monsters if they’re downed. This single-player feature is a decent way to have some form of assistance outside of your Palico and Palamute. In a way, you’ll still have some backup needed, and maybe even some random banter, if you don’t want to focus too much on the multiplayer experience.
Note: Companions who get downed during a mission don’t count toward your failure/retry limit.
Support Surveys
Support Surveys in Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak allow you to choose from a pool of available companions, and you’re allowed to bring up to two by default. You may even change their weapon types, though the selection is fairly limited. From there, you’ll take out the creatures that are required for the objective.
Note: When you’ve just been introduced to this system, only Fiorayne and Luchika are available as companions. You can unlock Luchika by speaking to her when she has the purple dialogue box. The rest become available by way of Follower Quests.
Follower Quests
Follower Quests are still regular hunts, except they’re handed to you by an important NPC. You’ll know that there’s one that can be undertaken if you see a character with a purple dialogue box. Alternatively, a courier in Elgado will have a purple dialogue box on their head if the character in question is in Kamura Village. After talking to them, speak to Chichae and pick the mission that you want to handle.
As mentioned earlier, only Fiorayne and Luchika can join you at the start. Still, more quests will pop up as you continue to increase your Master Rank. Additionally, there are cases when you need to complete several Follower Quests before that person becomes part of the selection pool in Support Surveys. Anyway, here are the other Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak companions that can aid you in your journey:
- Jae
- Rondine
- Arena Master Arlow
- Hinoa
- Minoto
- Master Utsushi
- Elder Fugen
Note 1: Completing Follower Quests also nets you Royal Order-type weapons.
Note 2: Fiorayne will join you for some boss hunts, such as Garangolm, Lunagaron, and Malzeno, as these are tied to the campaign’s storyline.
Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak is available via Steam.
