Dark Aether Rift Easter Egg Guide for MWZ

I’ll explain the Easter Eggs step by step in a moment, but there are a couple of prerequisites. We will also be diving into spoilers, so consider yourself warned.

The most time-consuming prerequisite is you must complete the Act 5 Story. You earn a Gold Mr. Peeks doll from the Reward Rift at the end of the Act, and it’s an essential part of the Easter Egg.

You also need a few Schematics from previous seasons, which can be a real problem if you’re new to Zombies and playing catch-up. These Schematics are tied to specific unlockables. I’ll explain each in just a moment, but you will ultimately need the following items:

The goal is to collect three items, which are “Echoes” of previous seasonal rewards. Unfortunately, if you’ve hoarded the items from those seasons, they will not work for the Easter Egg.

Once you have those items, you must upgrade them, which is another task altogether, but let’s get those items in your inventory first.

How to collect the Purple Echo of Giraffe in MWZ

Let’s start with the easy item. The Echo of Giraffe is simple to obtain but requires the Sergeant’s Beret.

The Sergeant’s Beret acts like a disguise, allowing you to walk undetected among Mercenary (human) enemies. All you need to do is get behind a Mercenary and execute them (hold the melee button), and the Reward Rift will promptly spawn where you landed the kill.

You can do this anywhere, so it’s a good idea to find Mercenaries in the Tier 1 difficulty zone where resistance is minimal.

The Blood Burner is mandatory for this task. Head to the bridge in the Tier 3 zone marked above and spawn your Blood Burner. This bridge is important as it’s home to a blue bunny toy, which marks the start of a makeshift race course.

Ride your bike into the waterway next to the bunny, and you’ll notice white arrows painted on the walls directing you down the stream. Follow those arrows on the Blood Burner, and they will take you around a short route ending at a burnt-out police car.

I’m unsure if there’s a time limit, but if you’ve completed the route correctly, a Reward Rift will spawn at the car where you can collect the Purple Drum.

The Blood Burner has the unique trait of riding on top of water, and you cannot complete the task with any other vehicle or on foot.

How to get the Purple Echo of Diary

The Echo of Diary can be obtained from a Reward Rift upon killing five Mimics with an Aether Blade. You can do this anywhere, and like the previous items, the Aether Blade is mandatory.

In my research, this step seems pretty finicky. I’ve read conflicting reports on how much damage you must inflict with the Aether Blade. Some players say all the damage must be done with the Aether Blade, while others suggest you can just finish them off.

I recommend only using the Aether Blade just to be on the safe side. You’ll have an easier time battling Mimics in the Tier 1 Zone, as these enemies hurt if they land a few hits.

How to upgrade Echoes in MWZ

Once you have all three Echoes, you must upgrade them before using them. Each item has a unique unlock requirement, which will send you across the entire map.

Remember that you need the item in your inventory to upgrade them, and it may be safer to do this across a few runs.

Head to the Shorok Opera House in the Tier 2 Zone and the Tower at the front. If you climb the structure, you’ll find a zombie corpse hanging off an edge. You can offer your Echo of Drum here to start the upgrade process.

You must defeat Zombies with different Ammo Mods, which you can gather from the four Obelisks around the tower. The Mod type is based on the color of the flames, although the difference is a little tricky to see when you’re being chased.

Zombies will spawn all around the structure and once you’ve defeated enemies with each Ammo type, a Reward Rift will appear. You can collect the upgraded Drum from the Rift.

A word of warning: It is possible to lose the Echo of Drum here. If you die or fail the task, the item is lost, and you’ll need a new one.

The Diary has a pretty unique upgrade process and is easily the most fun part of the Easter Egg. Head to the Bird statue in Talanov Outpost (pictured above). You can climb underneath the statue and offer the Echo of Diary.

Several cans of PHD Flopper will spawn along with a rift. Take the Flopper Cans into the rift, and you’ll teleport on top of one of the Chimneys in Popov Power.

Drink your PHD Flopper and peer off the side of the Chimney. You’re looking for the blue shipping crate with a symbol on top (pictured above). If you dive off the Chimney with Flopper active and land on the box, you’ll survive the fall, and a Reward Rift will spawn.

Head to Nahr Bathhouse in Tier 3, where you’ll find a broken white van with a corpse inside. Interact with the corpse to hand over the Echo of Giraffe to start the challenge.

When you place the Giraffe, a massive group of enemies will spawn, which you must defeat. A decent kit is strongly advised, as the monsters are no joke.

A Reward Rift will spawn once you’ve defeated every enemy, giving you the final upgraded item.

How to use the Upgraded Echoes in MWZ

Head to the compound near Opal Palace in the dead center of the map. You’ll find a fountain with four small Rift Pedestals. Each pedestal has a symbol that matches one of your upgraded items.

Place all four items, and a rift will spawn nearby. Defeat the Mega Abomination it brings, and open the Reward Rift for a Dark Aether Rift Sigil.

You can use this Sigil to open the Rift, but if you want a shot at the New Schematics, you will also need to use an Elder Sigil.

Inside the Dark Aether Rift

As you may expect from the finale of MWZ, the Aether Rift is exceptionally rough. Top-tier enemies are everywhere, and you’re expected to bring Pack a Punch Level 3 weapons to deal with them.

There are three contracts to complete in the area, and much like the Story area, a Scorcher is strongly recommended to get around.

Once you complete the three contracts, you must fight a boss Disciple for a chance at one of the Season 5 Reloaded Schematics. The event is repeatable, although you must farm all the items whenever you want another go.

If you’re a returning player, MWZ is pretty daunting as there’s so much content. Start with the basics, like Armor Mods, complete the story missions, and you’ll catch up in no time.
