As Call of Duty fans no doubt already know, last year’s launch of Modern Warfare 2 did not go too well. Not only did it suffer from numerous bugs and other technical issues, but it also lacked several staple features and modes that players expected to see. One of these missing modes, Hardcore mode, had previously shown up in every installment since the original Modern Warfare in 2007. Now, developer Infinity Ward has finally addressed the Hardcore mode’s absence by adding it to Modern Warfare 2 as part of Season 2, which will arrive on February 15.
For those unfamiliar with Call of Duty’s Hardcore mode, it essentially strips out much of the game’s HUD, implements friendly fire, and sees players dying in about one or two shots. Of course, these changes exist to cater to players looking for a much more challenging and tense experience. They also intend to give a more “realistic” feel to the game, although that can only go so far given Call of Duty‘s fast-paced, arcadey core gameplay.
No HUD? No problem. Hardcore is back!

Wasn’t Hardcore mode already in Modern Warfare 2?
Before Infinity Ward announced this mode’s return, the developer actually did implement a Hardcore mode of sorts through the Tier 1 playlist that dropped as part of Season 1 in November. Fans generally saw this new mode as a poor substitute for a traditional Hardcore mode, however, and not just because of the strange choice of name. Unlike Hardcore mode, Tier 1 completely removed the in-game HUD in addition to the kill feed, hitmarkers, and other useful features. This left players with little to no feedback on their current performance.
Infinity Ward stated that it will share more information on the upcoming Hardcore mode and the rest of Modern Warfare 2Â Season 2 at some point next week. As all of this is going on, publisher Activision is still facing allegations of sexual harassment and other abuses.
