Game developers Trion and the SyFy network have spoken about the joint MMO / TV project they’re developing, called One Earth.
As we reported over a year ago back in June 2008, the companies have designed a new MMO that will have an associated TV program. But unlike other games tied in with TV programmes or films, events in the game will have a direct effect on the TV show, and vice versa.
According to our previous reports, developers were planning to base the story on the recent Battlestar Galactica series, but decided to scrap the idea and start off with a clean slate. One Earth is said to be based about 100 years in the future, and we might see it sometime this year. Back in 2008, SyFy’s Dave Howe explained some of the ideas behind the joint venture.
“[the show] can tell them that there will be an alien invasion at a certain place in the game, at a certain time, and to be there with all their friends and be ready.” He said. “The outcome depends on them. And then that battle will be part of the universe in the show,”
It’s also been hinted at that characters who draw interest in the game might feature in the TV programme.
A new video, showing the game’s progress so far, but mainly dealing with the funding of One Earth, was released earlier. Watch it below.
