Microsoft Flight Simulator was the surprise hit of the summer in a period already packed to the gills with huge releases. Our own review of the game was extremely positive and the title has seen a steady stream of support since it launched. Fans of flying the blue skies have something else to look forward to now, as Microsoft announces how to sign up for the Microsoft Flight Simulator VR closed beta.

Microsoft Flight Simulator VR is coming and Microsoft is having a closed beta test for those that wish to test it out. As of today virtual pilots now know what exactly they have to do to give this new version a whirl. You can find the official announcement here, but we will break down the important bits for you as well.

In order to qualify for the closed beta, you must first meet the following requirements. First, you must own Microsoft Flight Simulator (duh), and you must also own a VR headset (double duh). This first phase of the beta will focus exclusively upon Windows Mixed Reality Devices (or WMR HMDs), and the second phase will expand to include more devices.

How to get into the VR pilot’s club

Next, you must be a registered member of the Microsoft Flight Simulator Insider Program. This is a community of Microsoft Flight Simulator players that works with the development team on ways to improve the game. Players do this by completing surveys, using the group’s private forums, as well as receiving weekly newsletters on the state of the game. All you need to join is a Microsoft account, which is free to create, and you probably already have one anyway.

Then you will submit your DxDiag, agree to an NDA, and you must of course meet the minimum specifications. What are the minimum specifications? Glad you asked.

  • OS: Windows 10 (November 2019 Update – 1909)
  • DirectX: DirectX 11
  • CPU: Intel i5-4460 or Ryzen 3 1200
  • GPU: Nvidia GTX 1080 or equivalent
  • VRAM: 8 GB
  • RAM: 16 GB
  • HDD: 150 GB
  • Bandwidth: 5 Mbps
