The Metroid Prime remaster rumor mill has been going for a while now. Originally the rumor spoke about a release in fall 2022. Outside of the rumors surrounding its release, everything was silent until the Nintendo Direct yesterday. The game released digitally on February 8, and has a physical version slated for February 22. In Europe however, the physical version isn’t out until March 3, which is roughly a fortnight after launch in the United States.

Metroid Prime, for those who are unaware, was a game developed by Retro Studios in 2002 for the Nintendo GameCube. It was the first 3D game in the Metroid series, and shifted the perspective to a first-person viewpoint. The game pioneered the 3D Metroidvania genre, along with its sequels.

Metroid Prime Remastered puts you in the shoes of bounty hunter Samus Aran as she tackles the challenges of Tallon IV. Tallon IV was once inhabited Chozo race, until five decades prior to the game. The Chozo fell after a meteor landed on Tallon IV, contaminating the planet with a substance later known as Phazon. The Chozo race are a key figure in Samus’ life, and the overarching plot of the Metroid series, so discovering the planet’s secrets is an enticing prospect.

The story of the Metroid Prime trilogy takes place between the original Metroid and Metroid II: Return of Samus, and a fourth game in the series is currently in development at Retro Studios.

Metroid Prime Remastered is available to purchase digitally from the Nintendo Store.
