It’s been the big question dividing players, press and developers in the MMO community of late: is World of Warcraft still the best MMO out there?
There’s no doubting that, despite the fall in numbers, the subscriber base for WoW is enormous and gives weight to any agreement centred around the “best MMO”. Of course, that debate has been given an extra injection of life in recent months with the release of Star Wars: The Old Republic which, while not yet close to WoW numbers, is performing admirably in the face of stiff competition.
Whatever the case, in the run up to the release of the Mists of Pandaria expansion, Blizzard still firmly (and predictably) believe that WoW is the best MMO out there. At least, that’s what they’re saying in public. But they would, wouldn’t they?
“I think the future of World of Warcraft continues to be bright and I think Mists of Pandaria is going to breathe huge life into what I believe is the best MMO out there,” said Blizzard COO Paul Sams. “I think the number of people we have playing and the level of enthusiasm they have for the game suggests that to be the case.”
Down from a high of over 12 million players a couple of years ago, Blizzard’s MMO still attracts a massive 10.2 million subscribers every month. And that’s despite admitting that EA/BioWare’s Star Wars: The Old Republic has negatively affected their user numbers.
Well, is World of Warcraft still the best MMO out there?
