Is the Dream Home trait worth it in Starfield?

A place to call your own.

As Starfield begins, players soon have to settle on three traits they wish to assign to their new character. This early decision can prove difficult, just because of how good nearly everything sounds, and one of the most enticing options is the Dream Home trait. Here, we discuss whether the Dream Home trait is worth it in Starfield.

Starfield – is the Dream Home trait worth it?

Since you can choose only three traits, it’s worth taking a moment to weigh your options. If you’ve already checked out our ranked list of the best traits in Starfield, you know we think highly of the trait. With that said, the Dream Home trait certainly isn’t right for everyone.

When you choose the Dream Home trait, you gain a mortgage. You don’t actually get to occupy the house. In fact, you must pay off a 125,000-credit debt before you own the building. Until then, you can only pay a smaller sum for brief access. For more details, see our guide explaining where to find your Dream Home, and how to pay it off.

A house of your own is extremely useful. Once you have a few common resources, you can use them to build a research station, and crafting stations. You can build a bed to get some rest. You can craft chests to store excess gear. It’s common to become encumbered in the game, so the extra storage may help a lot.

There are cheaper and more convenient homes you can acquire. To visit your Dream Home, you have to make a stop on the planet Nesoi. That’s fine. I do it all the time, since I chose the required starting trait. However, you can also buy two different houses in Akila City. The most expensive one sells for around 78,000 credits, plus it is located near the Freestar Collective Rangers headquarters. The second option costs even less.

Unless you’re really into the idea of buying real estate throughout the galaxy, I suggest skipping the Dream Home trait. The house you eventually own if you pay it off is my favorite of the available dwellings, but I didn’t even get to enjoy it for my first 10 or 12 hours of play. I don’t regret my choice, but other options may do more for your playthrough.

Starfield is available to purchase on Steam and the Microsoft Store.
