Microsoft has officially revealed DirectX 12 to the public at GDC. The API will not only run on high end gaming computers, but also desktops, laptops, smartphones, tablets, and the Xbox One. One of the developers got into the nitty gritty details in MSDN Blogs.
We’ll try not to bog you down with technical details, but DirectX 12’s main accomplishment is low level hardware abstraction, which means efficiency. They show off this 3DMark efficiency test, which shows an even use of resources (multi-threading) and 50 % more efficient use of the CPU.
Even a layman gamer with some familiarity with 3DMark can recognize the scope of Microsoft’s accomplishment here. Devs have even more to look forward to, as Microsoft will be releasing a new set of graphics tools to better utilize it. Interested in the technical details? Learn more here.
