So, last month, we had some concerns about Campo Santo’s next project, In the Valley of Gods. Rumors circulated that the game is no more, despite its intuitive gameplay and visual design. But that apparently isn’t the case, though it will be a while before we see it.
Polygon has now run a report confirming that the project’s “development is on hold” at the moment, but it is not canceled. The site recently spoke to studio co-founder Jake Rodkin about the game, who confirmed it is still alive. It’s just on hold for a while.
So what’s going on?
First off, Rodkin said that the game’s “optimistic” 2019 release date “isn’t going to be accurate.” After all, “Valve Time makes fools of us all,” with development team members working on other things at the company. That includes the just-announced Half-Life: Alyx, set to release early next year for VR.
Because some of the team is “lending a hand” in the development of both that game and Dota Underworlds, time had to be taken away from In the Valley of Gods. While development is on hold, “it certainly feels like a project people can and may return to.” Rodkin didn’t give a timetable for this, but he sounds optimistic that, yes, someday, it will eventually release.
“And when that happens, we’ll find an exciting way to let fans know,” he promised.
While Alyx no doubt has Half-Life fans excited for the return of the franchise, some folks may be bummed at the fate of Valley of Gods at the moment. But fret not. Campo Santo is doing big things for Valve, but the company hasn’t forgotten where its humble beginnings came from. Some day, folks. Some day.
Half-Life: Alyx currently has a release period of March 2020. Hopefully, fans of Campo Santo will see little hints of the studio’s work included with it. Check out its trailer below.
