The chemistry system featured in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom allows for the in-game temperatures to influence characters and objects in the world in interesting ways. Of course, the most obvious of these interactions involves placing a food item near a fire or in a superheated environment to gradually turn it into a cooked version of that item. A similar interaction can also occur when setting a piece of Raw Meat next to or within a source of extreme cold. Naturally, this turns the Raw Meat into the Icy Meat item which, while incredibly unappetizing, actually has some uses in Tears of the Kingdom outside of recovering your hearts.
Traits of Icy Meat in Tears of the Kingdom
The game makes it immediately clear that Icy Meat can grant you at least a minute’s worth of heat resistance, allowing you to cross areas like the Gerudo region with less difficulty overall. It usually makes for a less effective option than cooking a meal with a Chillshroom as an ingredient, but it can nonetheless help out in a pinch.
Freezing different meats will also raise their value in shops, albeit only slightly. Freezing Raw Gourmet Meat into Icy Gourmet Meat, which raises the standard price from 30 rupees to 40, and then selling it is the most lucrative option. The game used to have a rupee-farming glitch associated with Icy Meat, but the developers patched it out in a recent update.
However, the coolest use for Icy Meat in Tears of the Kingdom, no pun intended, comes when you fuse it to one of your shields. The Icy Meat will reduce the friction on your shield if you surf with it, which lets you traverse rough terrain using the technique much more easily. You can’t take Icy Meat out of your inventory, however, so freeze a piece of Raw Meat and then fuse it right away without picking it up to take advantage of this neat little trick.
