Ubisoft’s foray into the battle royale genre hasn’t resulted in a smash success yet. Hyper Scape saw an initial high level of interest during the beta period, but attention has dropped off since then. Regardless of the current player count, the publisher is still moving along with content for Season 1. The developers behind Hyper Scape released a mid-season roadmap today, which previewed the next five weeks. Expect new challenges, limited-time modes, memory shards, and something called Project Tower.
Live service games are no walk in the park for developers. It’s admirable to see games like Fortnite put out a ridiculous amount of content updates on a weekly basis, and it seems like Ubisoft is trying to keep pace. Admittedly, Hyper Scape’s schedule looks a little thin, though. That’s not to say that what Ubisoft is doing is necessarily lacking, but the battle royale market is extremely competitive.
Content or complacency?
In the Hyper Scape roadmap, we can see a narrative slowly unfolding, as is the case with most live service games these days. The comics will be interesting, and certainly a nice addition for players who enjoy narratives and lore. The first comic may also shed some light on what the mysterious Project Tower is. However, the challenges and collectibles scattered across the map aren’t anything special. In fact, those are standard for any game these days, so it’s weird for Ubisoft to promote them so much.
Things like the limited time modes and special events (like Project Tower?) are what will likely entice players to continue playing the game. That and of course gameplay balancing along with technical updates. The title update this week along with the Reddit AMA should help to move the game along and provide the developers with fresh feedback.
Judging by its roadmap, Hyper Scape still has a long way to go. If it’s going to succeed and keep up with Fortnite or Call of Duty: Warzone, it’s going to need more. The game certainly has its charm and merits, but only time will tell if Ubisoft has the commitment and the know-how to draw in more players.
