Humble Bundle has recently unveiled the May 2020 lineup for the Humble Choice subscription program. Leading the pack are two games that should be treats for strategy and simulation fans: XCOM 2 and Jurassic World Evolution.
Humble Choice May 2020: XCOM 2, Jurassic World Evolution, and more
The Humble Choice program — which replaced Humble Monthly — debuted back in December 2019 and, since then, it’s provided several games that can be picked up by subscribers. Unlike the old system, all games are revealed already, and you’ll simply need to select the ones you want. You can add these to your library or gift the keys to a friend (provided that the keys aren’t region-locked, of course).
This May 2020, Humble Choice subscribers will have the following games to choose from (up to a maximum of 10 picks):
- XCOM 2
- Jurassic World Evolution
- Rise of Industry
- Niche – A Genetics Survival Game
- Warhammer 40,000: Gladius – Relics of War
- The Swords of Ditto: Mormo’s Curse
- Warsaw
- Heave Ho
- Mo:Astray
- Neoverse
- Chess Ultra
- Horace
Let’s talk about the games
XCOM 2 by Firaxis Games is a turn-based strategy title where you build up your squad and HQ in order to fight the alien threat. Tim McDonald reviewed the base game back in 2016 citing that it “manages to recapture the magic of the first game without feeling like it’s retreading old ground.” The Humble Choice offering also includes the Reinforcement Pack and Resistance Warrior Pack DLCs which provide additional customization options and a few short missions. The latter actually has three DLCs bundled into one.
Note: The latest iteration of the franchise is XCOM: Chimera Squad. It has bite-sized missions separated by encounters and a more streamlined approach. So, if you’re keen on seeing what a larger, non-spinoff campaign is like, then XCOM 2 might pique your interest.
Another option, Warsaw, is a Darkest Dungeon-esque game set during World War II. I was able to review it back in October 2019 (6/10), and I did feel that it had flashes of brilliance. Unfortunately, it fails to straddle the line between a harsh, realistic challenge and the arcadey gameplay that wasn’t too enjoyable in the long run. Rise of Industry was also another title I reviewed last year (6/10). The tycoon game/management simulator did leave me disappointed since I found myself with very little to do as I progressed.
If you’re looking for a simulation game that’s a bit more stunning in its presentation, then Jurassic World Evolution might be more to your liking. In it, you’ll harvest dino DNA to recreate these giants and use them as attractions in the titular theme park. Beware, however, of threats such as breakouts, espionage, and even the weather. Humble Choice also includes the Deluxe Dinosaur Pack DLC which adds a handful of creatures.
