How to use Targeting mode in Starfield

Enemy ship on target.

With the amount of space combat that an average Starfield player will have to go through, making use of all tech and skills at their disposal is the best way to go. Thankfully, ships are very capable of defending themselves, and the Targeting system will help you out. It even will have you collect a bit of profit and goodies. Here is how to use the Targeting mode in Starfield.

Before you venture into space combat to try the Targeting system, you will first have to spend a skill point to unlock it. Targeting Control Systems is a Novice-tier skill in the Tech Skill Tree, meaning that you can purchase it without any requirements. This will unlock the ship’s ability to target an enemy ship and further ranks will increase the Targeting system’s speed and damage.

Now, once you enter conflict with another party in space, you will have to aim straight at the enemy ship. Your weapons will have aim assistance and will help you destroy your enemy’s shield. Keep shooting until you destroy it completely, making Target Lock shooting way easier. To use your Targeting system, keep your enemy in sight. You will start loading the Target Lock meter until 100%. Once you do, click the Target Lock button.

You will now enter a new screen that focuses on the enemy’s ship modules. You can choose to systematically disable the enemy’s modules of your preference. Be wary of two things. First, you will still get shot by other enemy ships, so your ship can be destroyed during Target Lock mode. Second, while targeting modules and shooting them will disable them, the ship will still receive overall damage. That means that you can destroy it even if that’s not your intention. I say this because, to board an enemy ship, you will have to destroy its engines. If you are not careful enough, you will end up destroying it, with all the loot and people inside it. Pick strategically and target away!
