Once you build your very first Outpost, you’ll have a multitude of options for buildings and Modules to create. This can be quite overwhelming if you don’t understand what everything’s purpose is. Luckily, I’m here to help, so let me explain how to use all Outpost Modules in Starfield.
Starfield: All Outpost Modules and how to use them
There are quite a few different categories of Outpost Modules, each with its own purposes. Outposts can be useful in many ways. Perhaps you want to use them for extracting precious resources, or to serve as a second home. No matter what you do with your Outpost, there are plenty of Modules to help you out.
Extractors
If you land on any moon or planet, there will be a few different resources available on the surface. Sometimes they’re available to just pick up, but other times they’re in the ground itself. The only way to mine resources in the ground is with Extractors. Find a space on a planet with at least two resource veins nearby each other, and place an Outpost beacon down. Now, I’m not going to make a list of all the Extractors, because there’s at least one type of Extractor for every single resource you can mine.
That would be an exhaustive list. Just know that as soon as you browse Extractors, it’ll only let you build ones that relate to the resources on your planet. For example, my planet may have Lead and Aluminum veins, so I’d be allowed to build specific Extractors for them. An Extractor’s power ranges from 5-20, so make sure you build a Power Module to fuel the Extractor (explained further below).
Power
While there are a few different Power Modules, they’re separated into three categories: Generators, Switches, and Lights. There are only three types of Generators for your Outposts, and it’s important to know which power sources are best to use.
- Solar Array: Uses energy from the sun to power certain Modules.
- Wind Turbine: Creates energy from the wind to power certain Modules.
- Fueled Generator: Requires Helium-3 to power instead of natural resources.
You should decide which one to use based on the planet your Outpost is on. If it gets a lot of sun, build Solar Arrays. Planets with a thicker atmosphere will generate wind, which is perfect for Wind Turbines.
I honestly don’t recommend building a Fueled Generator, just because you have to fuel it with Helium-3 to keep it going (although it produces more power than Solar Arrays and Wind Turbines). Also, you normally can’t just build one and call it a day. Make sure to look at how much power your Power Modules will provide, and see how much power your energy-powered Modules need.
Otherwise, here are the Switches and Lights Power Modules and what they can do for your Outpost:
- Powered Switch: Activates/deactivates a Module.
- Industrial Light: Produces light.
- Industrial Wall Light: Produces light on a wall.
- Light Post: Produces light.
Storage
These modules are exactly what you think they do. They hold stored items or can transfer items. There are only three available, but they’re all pretty useful once you start using Extractors.
- Storage (Solid, Liquid, Gas): Stores resources of either three types. Comes in different sizes.
- Transfer Container: Allows you to access storage while on your ship, and can transfer resources from Extractors to storage.
- Warehouse (Small, Medium, Large): Provides larger area for storage.
Builders
There’s only one Module in this category, and it’s the Simple Fabricator. This Module allows you to create simple types of goods, like Adaptive Frames, Polytextiles, etc. This will require an ongoing supply of resources and power to consistently create the desired item.
Crafting
All your favorite workbenches and labs are under this category. Under Crafting Modules, you can create Industrial, Weapon, and Spacesuit Workbenches, as well as a Cooking Station and a Pharmaceutical/Research Lab. This is perfect for if you’re using your Outpost as a central base or home, and you know you’ll be using crafting benches often.
Defenses
If you know your Outpost is in a dangerous area, you may need to consider building some Defense Modules. These are weapons designed to protect you or any crew at your base. There are three main options for Defense Module types, each hitting enemies within range with different damage types:
- Ballistic Turrets
- Tick Turrets
- Laser Turrets
Structures
There are a plethora of different Structure Modules you can build for your Outpost. These are areas that you can house crew in and live inside safely. There are four specific types of Structures in Starfield:
- Airlocks: Door leading into the Habs (Habitat Modules).
- Outpost Airlock
- Habs: Different rooms with specific purposes and designs.
- Four Wall, Hydroponic, Science, Military, Round, Small Hex
- Hallways: Connects different Habs.
- Industrial, Military, Science, Hydroponic
- Towers: A lookout tower.
- Watchtower

Furniture
What kind of Outpost Hab wouldn’t have furniture? Of course, you’re free to place them outside, but they’re probably best built for inside your Structure Modules. Furniture mostly serves as decoration, but some like Seating and Beds allow you to sleep and change the time of day:
- Seating: To wait and change time of day.
- Stools, Chairs, Couches, Benches
- Beds: To sleep and change time of day.
- Beds, Cots, Bunk Beds, Futons, Sleeping Bags, Surgical Beds
- Tables: Decorative.
- Side Tables, Coffee Tables, Medical Tables, Bar Tables
- Navigation Consoles: Opens Starmap.
- Desks: Decorative.
- Wooden Desks, Console Desks
- Partitions: Decorative.
- Cabinets: Decorative.
- Wall Cabinets, Industrial Cabinets
- Shelves: Decorative.
- Supply Shelves, Wall Shelves, Plant Shelf, Bookcases
- Refrigerator: Decorative.
Decorations
Here’s where we get into the much smaller items. Although Furniture Modules are lovely, how about a little bit of decor? Decoration Modules are smaller items you can build to make your Habs feel a lot more cozy. Yet again, there are categories of Decorations, with a few unique types:
- Storage: For storing items, alongside contraband.
- Ammo Cases, Storage Crates, Storage Boxes, Coolers, Industrial Crates, Science Crates, Military Crates, Contraband Crates
- Lamps: For lighting.
- Flood Lamps
- Wall Decorations: Decorative.
- Signs, Pictures, Posters, Dart Boards, Wall Monitors
- Floor Decorations: Decorative.
- Rugs, Floor Mats
- Appliances: Decorative.
- Stove Top, Drink Machine, Water Cooler, Coffee Machines
- Plumbing: Decorative.
- Toilet, Sink
- Plants: Decorative.
- Potted Plants, Planters, Hanging Plants
- Miscellaneous: Decorative.
- Street Dryer, Carts, Trash Cans, Caution Cone, Desk Monitor, Diagnostic Machine, Towel Rack, Toilet Paper, Storage Bin, White Board, Hanging Rug
Robots
Yes, you can actually have Robots in your Outpost! Robot Modules actually have some cool purposes, so it’d be wise to build some if you’re running a large Outpost. Here are all the available Robots:
- Sanitation Robot: Increases production rate of inorganic resources by 10%.
- Garden Robot: Increases production rate of organic resources by 10%.
- Engineering Robot: Increases production rate of manufactured items by 10%.
- Logistics Robot: Increases production rate of all resource types by 5%.
- Power Management Robot: Increases outpost of all generators.
Displays
This unique type of Module serves to display various items of yours. Think of ways to store your armor, weapons, and even simple items from your inventory. If you want to show off your cool items in your Outpost, here are all the options available:
- Mannequin: Displays armor.
- Male/Female Mannequins
- Displays: Displays inventory items
- Display Cases, Helmet Displays, Data Slate Displays
- Weapon Racks: Displays weapons.
- Single Weapon Racks, Multi-Weapon Racks
- Weapon Storage: Displays weapons.
- Weapon cases
- Stands: Displays Packs.
- Backpack Stands
Miscellaneous
Last but not least, these are the Miscellaneous Modules you can create for your Outpost. They’re all quite random, and each has a pretty useful purpose:
- Scan Booster: Increases range of hand scanner.
- Cargo Links: Allows you to transfer goods from one Outpost to another.
- Crew Station: Allows you to assign crew members to an Outpost.
- Landing Pads: Allows you to land at your Outpost (shipbuilder variant allows you to buy/modify ships)
- Mission Boards: View Missions.
- Self-Service Bounty Clearance: Removes bounties.
