How to use Advanced Defending in EA Sports FC 24

To play Advanced Defending, or not play Advanced Defending?

EA Sports FC 24 is the newest edition of EA Sports’ footballing franchise, after the name change from FIFA to EA Sports FC. In changing over to the new name, there are a few new additions to the game, like Evolutions in Ultimate Team. But another one is PlayStyles, a new feature that allows EA to try and define a players play style more accurately, and to great effect. Some of these help in attacking, possession, midfield, and defense. Speaking of defense, Advanced Defending is something that you can use in defense to try and gain the upper hand on your opponent, but it can take some time to get used to. Here’s our guide on how to use Advanced Defending in EA Sports FC 24

First things first, you can change over to Advanced Defending from what you usually use by going into the game’s settings on the main menu and scrolling down in the gameplay section until you reach defending and changing the option – from Tactical Defending to Advanced Defending. After you do that, you can read about the changes it makes on the right-hand side. TL;DR, Advanced Defending allows you to pick the type of challenges that you make in EA Sports FC 24, as well as turning off some assistance with defending in general that Tactical Defending gives you.

If you’re trying to decide between which of the two to pick from, I personally stick with Advanced Defending, because I have always complained when my player doesn’t go in for the type of standing challenge that I want. I usually want my player to go in with a shoulder barge, but instead they lunge in, usually resulting in a foul. So Advanced Defending is what I use in EA Sports FC 24.

Using Advanced Defending

Using it is a bit more complex than just that though, as using Advanced Defending means you will have to do more work yourself, to make sure you know which challenge to use, and positioning yourself correctly. The basics of defending aren’t going to change here, you’re still going to want to jockey and keep pressure on opponents, but it’s all about learning when to use the new Seal Out challenges and shoulder barging you get access to while using Advanced Defending in EA Sports FC 24.

This can take some time, but if you do most of the defending yourself and don’t let the AI do defending for you, like myself, this becomes second nature pretty quickly. When you’d want to go in for a shoulder challenge/barge or Seal Out, press/hold the pass button (or whatever button it’s mapped to for you, it will show in settings when you hover over the toggle for Advanced Defending we were talking about earlier), and then go in for one. Other defending methods stay on the same buttons as before, but now the Stand Tackle button is simply a Stand Tackle button, with no shoulder barging involved. My advice is to jockey the player you’re trying to challenge, and when you see an opportunity to outmuscle them, hit the Seal Out button and hopefully claim the ball from your opponent.

Hopefully this guide helps you learn how to use Advanced Defending in EA Sports FC 24.
