Unlocking Blacksmith in Star Ocean: The Second Story R

Blacksmith is a Super Specialty and that means that it only unlocks once each member in your party builds up the correct specialties to a certain level. For an in-depth look, be sure to check out our guide on how to unlock a Super Specialty in Star Ocean The Second Story R.

Head over to Blacksmith in the IC/Specialty menu and take note of the information on the right-hand side. It lists Conditions that your party needs to meet before this Super Speciality can be used. In Blacksmith’s case, you need to raise each character’s Customization and Alchemy Specialties. This is done by upgrading their relevant options in the IC/Specialties menu. So for example, to upgrade Customization, you’ll need to put points into Eye for Detail, Smithing, and Aesthetic Design.

I unlocked Blacksmith with two characters at level 4 Customization, one at level 3, and then Celine was level 4 in Alchemy. This system seems to work based on an average, so doing what I’ve done should work for you as well.

The best ways to use Blacksmith

Blacksmith lets you turn raw material into armor and accessories of varying quality. It’s all dependent on the material you’re using, and with Blacksmith, you can use Iron, Orichalcum, Meteorite, Rune Metal, Moonite, Damuscus, and Mithril alongside a Smith’s Hammer to create items. Most of these materials are extremely rare and are only dropped from certain enemies. But as the game goes on you may be able to find them in some chests.

The amount of armor you can make with Blacksmith is vast. Plus the results can even change as you progress through Star Ocean: The Second Story R and find certain items like the Magical Rasp. It’s also worth noting that higher-tier materials have levels attached to them. And if you’re Blacksmith Super Specialty is still quite low, your odds at making armor with things Mithril are very low. Of course, there’s always the save scum tactic which I’d heavily recommend you employ.

With Blacksmith you can make infamously broken gear in Star Ocean: The Second Story R. This includes items like the Bloody Armor which makes the wearer invulnerable to damage but slowly drains their HP during battle. But there are a ton of other items you can make so be sure to experiment plenty.
