Organization is key in the Lord of the Rings: Return to Moria, and you will have a staggering amount of resources to store. You may have seen users online stacking their chests upon each other, and have been wondering how it’s possible.
Can you stack your chests in Return to Moria?
Since the launch of Return to Moria, early players, myself included, found it mighty convenient to build chests on top of each other to save storage space. I remember having a wall full, from corner to corner of chests in a very optimized storage system.
However, that doesn’t seem possible since one of the many patches that Free Range Games developed post-launch. It seems that this practice has been outlawed. But it still is sort of possible to emulate the building technique.

Ways to stack chests in Return to Moria
Although none of these examples don’t look nearly as good or neat as chest stacking did before the patch, they may provide you with more convenience.
A chest can be placed as long as it has a solid structure below it to sit on. Even though flat walls don’t have this, other building structures, like columns and beams, may have the tiniest of details that the chests will register as floors.
You’ll have to get the placement almost pixel-perfect, but it’s possible, and with a row of wooden beams you can create a two-story chest wall that looks cool and is effective. Just make sure all the beams line up.
Although a little uglier, you can make use of bigger columns and structures to place a bunch of chests out of the way. This may not look good in your base, but might fly in a separate storage shack or warehouse. You can utilize the details of walls and columns to make ugly yet space-efficient chest storage.
So although we’ll never be able to have walls with chests stacked all the way up it like we used to, we can still make use of tiny textures that provide just enough flooring for a chest to be placed there. It may be best to keep these out of sight.
I hope you’re not too disappointed with the result, and that you’ll find some way to make peace with what we’ve got.
