Solving puzzles requires using your brain power to deduce the proper solution. But what if the brain is part of the puzzle? We’re going to turn on some lights and figure out how to solve the brain puzzle in Alone in the Dark.
Alone in the Dark — How to turn on power in the Laboratory
Towards the end of Chapter 4, things start to get a bit dire as the rain pours on the facade of Derceto Manor. After doing a bit of sleuthing your journey takes you to the bowels of the estate, otherwise known as the Infirmary.
In the Infirmary, there are images of Jeremy’s brain you must pair together to progress the story. You don’t have every piece of the brain immediately, but the only picture not in the Laboratory is located just down the hall in the Quarantine room. Along with the brain pictures, you’ll need to find a few fuses, as the power has not worked in this area for a while.
Where to find the Electrical Fuses
Investigating the Laboratory for the first time, you find a decent amount of items and clues. This is not only where you put the brain pictures together, but also where you find the first fuse. Along with the fuse, there’s a key to the Surgery room you can use on the door outside the Laboratory. Depending on your Player Guidance settings selected, this next fuse might be easier or harder for you to find.
You’ll hear people speaking from outside the Surgery room, but once you unlock the door and enter, you’ll find it empty. The only noise emanating from the room is caused by an electrical device in the corner. Interact with this device, and you’ll have yourself the final fuse you need to turn on the power.
Head back to the Laboratory and slap the fuses into the breaker box next to the brain screen. You have to flip all the fuses upward to turn on the power. However, when you flip one switch on the breaker, another switch will flip along with it. This can make turning on the power a bit confusing if you don’t know what pattern to flip the switches in. Thankfully there is an easy solution to this mini-puzzle that only requires three flips.
To turn on the power in the Laboratory, flip the second switch up, first switch down, and the fourth switch down. After that, the power will turn on and you can tackle the actual puzzle.
Alone in the Dark — How to solve the brain puzzle
Interact with the light screen on the wall and place the Radiograph images to the right of it to get started. This puzzle gave me a bit of trouble on my first playthrough and was probably the second-most challenging puzzle in the game. Mostly because you have two extra X-ray Plates that you can mess with, further confusing you on the correct ones.
Not only are there extra plates that don’t fit, but you’ll need to rotate each plate so they align themselves together. You must use the two plates on the top row, and the plate in the second row on the right.
Now that you have the correct plates, you need to know where to place and rotate them. Here is the proper placement to solve the brain puzzle in Alone in the Dark:
Once the puzzle is solved, an intriguing yet perplexing object springs from the dark parts of the brain image. This will help you wrap up the later half of Alone in the Dark, and you shouldn’t have to come back to the Infirmary once this is done. And if this is your second time through the game, you have the chance to watch a secret cutscene if you’ve acquired the right items.
