How to return to the Grasslands in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth

How do you get back to old regions?

The world of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is divided into multiple regions, and the main story will take you to a new region every few chapters. However, the game doesn’t warn you that you can’t return to old regions until much later in the story.

If you leave unfinished quests, collectibles, or World Intel in a region, you won’t be able to go back and wrap things up until you progress further in Rebirth’s main story. Even then, returning to the Grasslands region requires the completion of a specific side quest that can be hard to find. Here’s what you need to do before you can get back to the Grasslands in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth.

How to Fast Travel Back to the Grasslands in FF7 Rebirth

Fast travel to other regions is unlocked at Costa del Sol near the end of Chapter 6 in the main story, immediately after recruiting Yuffie to the party. At this point, the party sets off for Mt. Corel but the game will notify you that you can head back to Junon using the Shinra-8 ship that brought the group to Costa Del in the first place.

To travel between Junon and Costa del Sol, all you need to do is head to the Shinra-8 crew member at the marked icon on the map. If you want to go back to the Grasslands, however, you need to complete a special side quest called Stuck in a Rut. You can find this quest in the Junon region, but it shows up under a different name on the map if you haven’t already started it.

How to Start the Stuck in a Rut Quest

To begin the Stuck in a Rut quest, return to the Junon region. Head to Under Junon and inspect the quest board to find The Ranch Owner’s Request. This will add a green side quest marker to your map for Stuck in a Rut. You can find it at the Chocobo Ranch south of Junon near the region’s Chocobo Intel (where you wrangled the Junon Chocobo).

Once you speak to the Chocobo Ranch owner, he’ll give you a crudely drawn map with three marked locations. Take a Chocobo to each of these locations and follow the nearby scent trails to uncover the three items needed to complete the quest. Each of the marked locations is between the Chocobo Ranch and Under Junon, so you don’t need to go that far.

After returning the items to Gabe at the Chocobo Ranch and completing the quest, you’ll be able to fast travel to the Grasslands region at any time. Just head to the Chocobo Ranch whenever you want to go to the Grasslands and he’ll take you to Chocobo Bill’s Ranch for just 300 Gil. Both regions’ Chocobo Ranches can also be used as standard fast travel points, too, so they can also take you to Costa del Sol for a price.

Much, much later in the game, you’ll be able to fast travel to any region in Rebirth for free. That won’t happen until the final hours of your adventure, however, so make sure to remember the fast travel locations for each region until then. Reaching the end of the game will unlock all sorts of quality-of-life features in addition to free fast travel, such as the ability to remove Cloud from your party entirely.
