How to recruit Lae’zel after she escapes from the cage in Baldur’s Gate 3

Getting a second chance.

Baldur’s Gate 3 is a game with many different solutions to any problem. There have been multiple times in my playthrough where I have been coming up against a hard fight that’s been a challenge for upwards of an hour. I then reset the fight, and instead try to shove the boss off the edge of a cliff, or simply talk it out by getting lucky rolls. The amount of options you have is one of the biggest draws and achievements of Baldur’s Gate 3, as it’s really astounding. One of the places where you can have multiple options is character recruitment, as some characters can be recruited at more than one point in your journey. Here’s our guide on how to recruit Lae’zel after she escapes from the cage in Baldur’s Gate 3.

Do you get a second chance to recruit Lae’zel?

You do in fact get a second chance to recruit Lae’zel after she escapes from the cage in Baldur’s Gate 3. She can be recruited with a bit of luck on your rolls, and knowing where/what to do to get into the situation. The first step you need to do is advance the story to the point where you need to go to Moonrise Towers. Now I’m not sure if this is a necessary step, but it’s where I got the ability to recruit her and I’m unsure if the NPCs that need to spawn do so if you don’t advance the story.

Baldurs Gate 3 Laezel Recruit Conversation

Here’s where you need to go to start the conversation. Screenshot by PC Invasion

To start the interaction to recruit You’re then going to want to go to the West of Waukeen’s Rest, where you’ll find the entrance to the Mountain Path that leads to Moonrise. Just before then, there should be some Githyanki soldiers and members of the Fist having an argument. When you walk up to them, a member of your party will warn you before you proceed, but proceed regardless. Now my sage advice for this section is to simply save often. Keep pressing that quicksave button and make sure you have one at every roll, because failing these rolls can result in a very hard fight. But once you get through them, you should be able to recruit Lae’zel in Baldur’s Gate 3.

Getting through the conversation to recruit Lae’zel in Baldur’s Gate 3

When you begin your conversation with Lae’zel and the Githyanki soldiers in Baldur’s Gate 3, the first option you get is to let Lae’zel continue speaking or to speak up yourself. You should select the option to speak up yourself, as this allows you to then talk to the Githyanki and influence the outcome of this conversation via different skill checks and have the outcome of being able to recruit Lae’zel in Baldur’s Gate 3. Once you have the option to start speaking to the Githyanki soldier, you’ll want to select the options in the following order:

  1. (Persuasion) I don’t know you. I pose no threat.
  2. You’ll need to start from the beginning – what is this weapon you’re after?
  3. (Arcana) Interpret the actions.
  4. Resist detect thoughts.
  5. (Persuasion) You ought to just leave. You’ve no right to decide my fate.

As mentioned above, a lot of these are skill checks, so be sure to quicksave often if you really want to recruit Lae’zel to your team in Baldur’s Gate 3 so you can reload and try the rolls again. There might also be other ways to get through this conversation without conflict, but this is the path that I chose that works for me. After you complete this conversation, you then need to talk to Lae’zel and select the option to travel together, and she will then agree to travel with you and become a companion!
