The afterlife doesn’t always have to be Greydwarves and Old Gods. If you know how to plant seeds and farm in Valheim, it can become the cute, country homestead you always dreamed of. You can go totally off the grid; turning off your Viking phone, and living off the land. On a serious note though, growing your own vegetables can make for quick and close-to-hand ingredients.
As you play through Valheim, you will often come across seeds from various plants and trees. With a cultivator, you can replant these seeds and grow your own vegetable patch.
What you need to plant seeds
- Hoe – Not absolutely necessary, but will help you level out the ground for planting. This is crafted using 5 x wood and 2 x stone.
- Cultivator – This is an essential tool for farming and requires 5 x core wood and 5 x bronze to craft.
- Seeds – These can be found around the map or crafted when you have made the seeds’ respective stew.
How to plant seeds and farm in Valheim
Once you have a pocket full of seeds, you’ll need to find some land on which you’re happy to start your garden farm. Obviously, close to a dwelling is usually best, as there’s no need in trekking miles to your veg. It also allows you to build a fence around your plot due to the proximity to a workbench.
Once you have picked an ideal spot, I would recommend flattening it out. There isn’t a real need for this, but it will help with fence building and is much more aesthetically pleasing. You will need a hoe to flatten land.
A cultivator will be required to turn the ground into soil ready for planting. With the seeds in your inventory, right-click with the cultivator in your hand and select the seeds you want to plant. You can now move around your patch and pop the individual seeds into the prepared soil.
Types of edible & farmable seeds
Not all seeds you can plant and farm in Valheim are edible, so keep an eye out for these three.
- Onion seeds – Mountain
- Carrot seeds – Black Forest
- Turnip seeds – Swamp
A few notes on how to plant seeds and farm in Valheim
When you plant a seed, harvesting the results won’t grant you another seed. To have a farm that continues to produce seeds, you will need to make the soup of whatever you’re trying to farm.
You don’t need to tend to your crops. Within an hour to 90 minutes of real time, they should be ready to harvest.
