How to master abilities in Final Fantasy 16 – mastery explained

Mastering a new ability.

Final Fantasy 16 takes you on the journey to save the land of Valisthea, conquering enemies and doing it in style as an Eikon. When you claim different Eikonic powers for yourself though, you can actually upgrade and learn new moves via the skill tree that’s in the menu. The new skills include new moves for you to use, and upgrade. An example of this is the Heatwave ability from Phoenix which fires a projectile to deal some major damage. Eventually, you can master these abilities, but what does mastering do, and how do you do it? Here’s our guide on how to master abilities in Final Fantasy 16.

To master your skills in Final Fantasy 16, you first need to head to the abilities screen in the menu. Here you can learn new abilities, and upgrade them. Upon learning an ability, you can then upgrade it. Upgrading your abilities for the first time will increase its efficiency, making it stronger, so it’s never a bad call to upgrade any ability that you’re using.

After you upgrade any ability once, you can then master these abilities in Final Fantasy 16. This costs a little bit more when it comes to the Ability Points required, but can be useful down the line. Unlike upgrading your abilities, mastering certain abilities doesn’t give you any benefit in combat as it doesn’t make the ability any stronger than it already is. An example of an ability that doesn’t gain any buff from mastery is Rising Flames, as the benefit for mastery of Eikonic Abilities is being able to be used with any Eikon pairing. That’s right, you can equip any Eikon Ability with any Eikonic pairing if you master them, which is a blessing for me, as I enjoy certain Eikon’s Eikonic Feats like Titanic Block, but don’t enjoy that Eikon’s Eikonic Abilities.

For some of the more standard moves and Eikonic Feats however, achieving ability mastery here actually does increase their proficiency, such as increasing the distance you can travel with Phoenix Shift or the amount of things you can Exact with Blind Justice.

Hopefully with this guide you’ve been able to learn how to master abilities in Final Fantasy 16 and now you know what abilities you know to master.
