In Ark Survival Ascended, you will need to get your hands on some thatch immediately to build a torch and start building shelter. But for those who have never played an Ark Survival game before, this finding thatch may not be obvious.
Getting thatch in Ark Survival Ascended
You’ll need to get pretty hands-on to get your hands on some thatch in Ark Survival Ascended. You can actually get thatch right off the bat very easily. You will have to take a note out of Minecraft’s book and punch some trees.
All trees produce thatch when you punch them, maybe not with every hit, but after a good walloping, you’ll get your hands on plenty of thatch and wood. You can even topple the tree with your bare hands.
Note that you get a lot more thatch when punching the tree than you do when you use a tool.
Sadly, punching trees damages your health. Alternatively, you can instead use “E” to gather items around you. In forested and jungle areas, you can spam the “E” key to collect a whole bunch of thatch from nearby foliage, alongside other forest goodies, like stones, wood, and berries.

Best locations to find Thatch in Ark Survival Ascended
The best location for some fast thatch is any sort of forested and tropical area. If you need thatch in a pinch, avoid beaches or snowy areas. Forests and jungles are your only hope. Running around and spamming the gather button is satisfying and an easy way to get dozens of the stuff.
Forests are preferable starting areas in Ark Survival Evolved, as you can run around for a few minutes and suddenly have enough materials to build a three-story mansion. Try not to spawn in snowy areas or unforested ones, as resources will be limited, which will slow down your progress in building a shelter and a campfire.
I hope this has cleared it up, and I wish you the best of luck in the rest of your adventure in Ark Survival Ascended.
