How to get out of the jail in Destiny 2 Warlord’s Ruin

Get out of jail (not so free).

After beating the first boss in the Destiny 2 Warlord’s Ruin Dungeon, you immediately get trapped in jail. It’s an escape room puzzle that can be hard to find, but I’m going to guide you through it.

Destiny 2 Warlord’s Ruin: How to get out of jail

My Fireteam and I were stuck on the jail part of Destiny 2 Warlord’s Ruin for a long time before we finally figured it out. Depending on if you have one, two, or three players in your Fireteam, you’ll be separated into different cells in the jail. You need to work together to break out.

Destiny 2 Warlord's Ruin Rotators

In this room, there are six rotators. They are wheels that when shot either rotate counter-clockwise, stop, or rotate clockwise. You’ll likely only be able to see two or three unless you’re playing solo in which case you’ll be able to see all six. They are hidden around the room. Here are the general locations of each rotator:

  • Top exterior of the corner cell facing the river
  • Top exterior of the corner cell facing the far cell
  • Far right wall when looking through corner cell
  • Far right wall when looking through ceilingless cell
  • Top exterior right of the ceilingless cell
  • Top exterior of the far corner cell
  • Destiny 2 Warlord's Ruin Four Tally Marks
  • Destiny 2 Warlord's Ruin Two Tally Marks

Once you have located all six rotators, the two people in the far cells (in other words, everyone but the player in the middle cell) need to read the tally marks found by or in their cell. They are white lines and skeletons are pointing toward them.

In my game, my cell had the skeleton in the cell to the left which notated four and my teammate had a skeleton in his cell pointing to two tally marks. These are random every time, so look at your tally marks and continue following along.

With the tally mark information received, you need to mirror it by rotating the rotators clockwise and counter-clockwise. In my game, we have four and two. That means we needed four going counter-clockwise and two going clockwise, or vice versa. The location of the rotators doesn’t matter, all that matters is the number going clockwise and the number going counter-clockwise.

Once you feel everything is correct, have the player in the middle shoot the switch outside the ceilingless cell. If you’re right, the gates will open and you’ll be free.

In my game, we tried four clockwise and then two counter-clockwise and shot the switch. It didn’t work. We then tried four counter-clockwise and two clockwise and that did the trick. Experiment with both ways to find which one works. Also, make sure you communicate — I swear we did four counter-clockwise and two clockwise early and it didn’t work because we had our numbers and directions wrong. Double-check everything before shooting the switch.
