How to get Borealis Camo as fast as possible in Modern Warfare Zombies

We all want the prettiest camo in the game

Borealis is one of the most sought-after Camos in MW3 and is exclusive to Modern Warfare Zombies. It’s a stunning decal, but make no mistake, you’ll have to work for it. If you’re struggling, let me show you how to get Borealis Camo as fast as possible in Modern Warfare Zombies.

How to get Borealis Camo in Modern Warfare Zombies

Before we dive into tips, let me explain how the grind to Borealis works so we’re all on the same page. Borealis is unlocked by completing every Zombies mode Camo challenge for 36 MW3 weapons.

You can view your Camo progression through the Gunsmith menu under the “Customize” Tab. Every gun has four unique Camos that are typically unlocked by leveling the weapon up (through use) and completing menial challenges. Most challenges are simple, like killing 250 Zombies when the gun has full attachments, but they all take time.

With the four regular challenges taken care of, you’ll have to work on additional tasks for the Golden Enigma, Zircon Scale, and Serpentinite. Once these are taken care of, you’ll be one of the few players to have Borealis, which you can show off in any game mode on any weapon.

Now that you know how to get Borealis, let me share some tips to make the grind easier.

Use Decoy Grenades

I slept on Decoy Grenades for the longest time, but now, I swear by them. Decoys are great if you’re about to be surrounded, but they are so much more than a simple panic button.

Zombies distracted by your Decoy Grenades count as “Affected by Tactical.” Some Camo challenges require this status, and as the distraction lasts so long, it’s an effortless way to complete the task.

How to complete the “Kills shortly after using Field Upgrade” Challenge

Scoring Kills shortly after using a Field Upgrade is one of the more obnoxious Zombie Camo challenges. The Energy Mine is excellent for this task as it has a short cooldown and is easy to use. I’ve seen some players recommend Frenzied Guard, although I’m not a fan, as it needs 75 kills to recharge.

Play through the Acts

While not strictly necessary for Camos, a little progress through the story goes a long way. Rewards like Schematics are tied to mission progression, which makes obtaining Ammo mods much easier.

Ammo Mods are required for some challenges, which ties nicely into my next tip.

Know your Ammo Mods

Some challenges task the player with inflicting specific status effects on enemies, but it doesn’t say which ammo type is required. Here are the Mods required for each status effect:

  • Freezing – Cryo Freeze
  • Electrified – Dead Wire
  • Toxic – Brain Rot
  • Fire – Napalm

As previously mentioned, you can get Ammo Mods by completing the story. You can also find these items on the field, and Aether Nests are a reliable, low-risk source.

What is a rare or higher weapon in MWZ?

Some challenges require a weapon of increased rarity, which is signified by the background color of the gun. For this Challenge, you need a Blue, Purple, or Orange rarity weapon. Unfortunately, Green doesn’t count

You can upgrade weapon rarity with an Aether Tool with a wrench symbol.

You can complete most challenges in Tier 1 areas

Modern Warfare Zombies is tough to tackle solo, but fortunately, that’s not a problem for the Camo grind. Although they may take longer, almost every Challenge can be beaten on the outer rim of the map, where the enemies are weakest.

The only Challenge you’ll struggle with is defeating Disciples, as they are most common in Tier 2 areas. As you can complete most challenges without fighting Disciples, you can always come back to these later.

Escort Contracts are outstanding for Camo grinding

Escort missions are good because they feature Hell Hounds, Manglers, and plenty of Zombies. They are also pretty safe in Tier 1 and can be completed solo. I’d still recommend having at least a two plate vest and an upgraded or Pack-a-Punch gun if you’re alone.

Why aren’t my challenges tracking?

The issue is far less prominent than it was at launch, but unfortunately, some challenges don’t track accurately. In my testing, the Brain Rot Ammo mod seems to play a big part in this. If you turn a Zombie, their kills rarely register, nor does shooting them in the first place.

I’ve read reports that weapons with Pack-a-Punch don’t always track. This issue isn’t something I’ve run into, but it’s something to consider.

These tips cover any challenge likely to cause problems and general gameplay advice. The most important thing to remember is to take your time. Borealis is a great incentive, but it can take the average player months to unlock. Remember, it’s a marathon, not a sprint, and isn’t worth burning out for.
