HoYoverse’s Honkai: Star Rail is a sci-fi strategy RPG from the creators of Genshin Impact that give players the chance of unlocking different characters. Instead of live-action combat, Honkai is all about turn-based combat, but still lets you build a party of four characters. How to get Honkai: Star Rail‘s free characters
Like its other gacha game, you’ll have to take a chance at rolling for your favorites. Rolling for character banners allows you the chance to receive one of the many characters in Honkai: Star Rail‘s roster. There’s still no guarantee that you’ll get a character at all, but that’s how gacha games roll—pun intended. You can pay real money to earn more currency for rolling, but you can always just grind for Stellar Jade.
At release, however, there are quite a few characters you can already unlock. Eight characters are available from the start, which you can roll for, or unlock in other free ways. Most of them are 4-stars, but they’re still some of the best in the game so far. We’ll provide you with a list of each free character and how you can unlock them:

- Trailblazer: Your main protagonist, available early on during the story
- Serval: Reward for Honkai: Star Rail reaching 5 million pre-registrations, check your Mailbox to receive
- March 7th: Through the tutorial
- Dan Heng: Also unlocked through the tutorial
- Asta: After doing your first Warp
- Herta: After completing your first Simulation mission
- Natasha: Once you complete main story mission ‘Lying in Rust’
- Qinque: After clearing ‘Forgotten Hall – Memory Stage 3’ and reaching Trailblaze Level 21
This is a very good set of starter characters that can make any team promising. These characters are also available in Warps, so you can upgrade their Eidolon levels. At least you should know now how to get all eight free Honkai: Star Rail characters.
