How to get ability to rise in Tears of the Kingdom

Arise to the challenge.

In The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, as in Breath of the Wild before it, you begin your journey by learning several abilities you will use for the remainder of your adventure. One such ability is called Arise. It is a powerful move that will come in handy for future puzzles that require vertical thinking. Here is our guide on how to get the ability to rise in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.

The Arise ability allows Link to jump toward an overhanging ledge, then grab onto it and ooze through it so he reappears on its top side. You then press the button indicated to emerge and keep exploring. It’s handy.

To gain the Arise ability, make your way to Gutanback Shrine and learn the skill from Rauru right as you enter. If you need help scaling the summit where the shrine is located, check out our guide on how to get to Snow Mountain Shrine. You can follow the method outlined there, or head around behind the waterfall to discover a rocky cliff face that lets you climb without assembling a makeshift ladder. I favor that approach, because it feels like a throwback to the waterfalls in The Legend of Zelda on the NES. Whatever your method, the goal is to reach the shrine.

Once you enter the shrine and learn the ability, you must put it to immediate use to clear a challenge called The Ability to Rise. Numerous ledges extend from the shrine’s high walls. Stand beneath them and look up. Then, use your Arise ability to rise through them and explore their top side. At one point, you can push crates out of your way to reach a high ledge. It hosts a treasure chest that contains the more durable Construct Bow. Elsewhere, shoot ropes holding a platform aloft to make it drop across a gap. Then use Arise to reach its top side.

If you have difficulty with the shrine, consult our guide on how to clear Gutanback Shrine. Well after you leave the shrine, you will find yourself putting Arise to use. It lets you navigate Hyrule in ways you never could previously. In fact, you should utilize it almost immediately after exiting the shrine to reach the mountain’s true peak.
