Live to fight another day.

On your journey through Baldur’s Gate 3, you will encounter some enemies that really know how to clean your clock. That’s a given. In such instances, you may wonder if you can take the coward’s way out (also known as making the smart play). Fortunately, you can indeed run from enemies that would otherwise obliterate you, provided you know how. Here is our guide explaining how to flee combat in Baldur’s Gate 3.

Baldur’s Gate 3 – how to flee combat

In a lot of RPGs, going back to the early days of the medium, you could select the ‘Run’ or ‘Flee’ option to get away from enemies that had a statistical advantage. I used those commands many a time in the old Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest games. However, there’s no such option here. To flee combat in Baldur’s Gate 3, you have to get out of an enemy’s range so they decide to forget about you.

As a typical battle begins, you’ll find your loyal crew lined up to face off against whatever foes have decided to darken your day. Hopefully, you weren’t the victim of a surprise attack. Once initiated, battle typically proceeds until one side or the other has persevered and left a field littered with its enemies’ corpses. There’s not much point in going through that process, however, when the results are a foregone conclusion and don’t favor your cause.

When you gain control of your team, it’s time to start a mad scramble away from any enemies. Your goal is to get out of their line of sight. Boost your chances of success by looking for architecture or shadows. Your characters’ stealth rating also plays a role. If you have a party comprised of sneaky sorts, they’ll have an easier time fleeing a fight.

To further improve your chances, try jumping and dashing. These efforts, which count as your move that turn, may put distance between your characters and their pursuers more efficiently. You want to widen that divide in a hurry, before enemies have a chance to close in and make a show of their superior strength. After all, you can always try to flee. There’s no guarantee you’ll succeed.
