There’s nothing worse than trying to enjoy a session of Modern Warfare 3 and getting stopped by an error. Battle.net users have experienced higher reports of the “something went wrong with a file” error while trying to boot up Call of Duty HQ.

Call of Duty Updates on Twitter (or X) posted that they are investigating the issue behind the “something went wrong with a file” error that occurs when you’re trying to launch Modern Warfare 3. I recommend following CODUpdates on Twitter (or X) to get the latest info on fixing your issues.

Call of Duty Updates confirmed that deleting and reinstalling Modern Warfare 3 is the only workaround for this issue. They are working on fixing it, but that is the only fix you can do for now. Knowing how long it takes to download MW3, you might actually save time waiting for the fix.

As is the case with most errors that plague MW3, Activision is aware of this and is working to fix it. I don’t recommend noodling around in your game files to try and fix this issue manually. My best advice is to wait for Activision to fix the issue.

While you wait for a fix, you can try the classics. Closeout and re-enter Battle.net, shut down and reboot your PC, and check that you have a secure internet connection. All of these methods can help fix errors no matter how small, and they are always worth a shot.

I’ve been able to overcome many errors by simply restarting my device. It’s a small fix but there’s a reason why it’s the go-to answer when trying to fix tech issues.

You may need to wait a while before this file error is fixed. If that is the case, then you should check out the fastest way to level up the Battle Pass in Modern Warfare 3.
