How to fix Fallout 4 London crashes, infinite loading screens, and other bugs

Bit of a pain to install, innit?

Mods are a huge part of the Fallout series’ continued popularity, and Fallout London is one of the largest pieces of community-created content that the franchise has ever seen. If you own Fallout 4 and all of its DLC, you can experience an entirely new DLC-sized mod that takes place outside of the United States.

Because Fallout 4 can already be so finicky in its vanilla form and mods can just cause even more problems on top of that, many Fallout London players are encountering issues when trying to boot up the mod for the first time. From crashes to infinite loading screens, there’s no shortage of bugs that you can run into when trying to play Fallout London, so this guide will walk you through solutions for each of the most common issues.

How to fix Fallout 4 London crashing

One of the most common problems with Fallout London is crashing, particularly after the opening train sequence at the beginning of the mod. Thankfully, the Fallout London community has already found a fix that resolves most of the crashing issues with the mod.

To solve crashes in Fallout London, you need to install an additional mod called Buffout 4 which aims to improve stability and decrease crashes overall in Fallout 4. Once it’s installed, head to the Fallout 4 folder in your install directory and find f4se_loader.exe. Then, replace the existing version of f4se_loader.exe with the version found inside the Buffout 4 zip folder that you downloaded.

After replacing the file, right-click the .exe and enable compatibility mode. Then, just run it as an administrator. This should remove most of the crashes that you can experience in Fallout London.

How to fix infinite loading screens in Fallout London

If you’re experiencing a never-ending loading screen, then there’s also an easy fix for that. Some players have discovered that the FalloutCustom.ini file in the My Games/Fallout 4 folder is overwriting some of the Fallout London mod files, so just heading to Documents/My Games/Fallout 4 and deleting the FalloutCustom.ini file should fix it.

If that doesn’t work, then delete the My Games/Fallout 4 folder entirely. Then, boot up vanilla Fallout 4 without any mods installed to create a clean version of that folder. After that, install Fallout London or open the Fallout London launcher and click the update button to verify files and add anything that the mod needs.

How to fix Fallout 4 London starting vanilla FO4

Some players are encountering a rare issue where the game boots into the vanilla Fallout 4 character creation screen despite the Fallout London mod being installed. One simple fix for this is to open the Vortex Mod Manager and ensure that the LondonWorldSpace.esm plugin is enabled. After enabling that, restart the game and you should end up at the correct character creation screen for Fallout London.

If that doesn’t work, then you’ll need to do a full reinstall of Fallout London. Try the above fixes for the infinite loading screen bug as well, since the vanilla character creation problem seems to be linked to the loading screen issue for some players. As long as you correctly downgrade Fallout 4 and install the mod according to the instructions, however, you should be able to reach the correct character creation screen.
