All ‘failed to load friends list’ error fixes in Diablo 4

There are several ways to fix the “failed to load friends list” error in Diablo 4. Follow this list chronologically to solve this issue and get back to playing Diablo 4 with your friends as fast as possible.

Restart Diablo 4

In my research, I found that a lot of Diablo 4 players experiencing this “failed to load friends list” fixed their issue by simply restarting the game.

Whether you are on PC or console, force close Diablo 4, wait a few seconds, and launch it again. Once you’re in the game, try pulling up your friends list and inviting your friends to your game. If this doesn’t work, you can try another fix on this list.

Power cycle your device

The next thing you can do to fix this Diablo 4 bug is to power cycle your device. To do that, all you need to do is shut off your PC or console, wait a few seconds, unplug the power cable, wait a few seconds, plug it back in, and boot up your device.

Usually, a quick refresh like this can magically solve errors and bugs. Don’t ask me how, I’m not an IT expert — all I know is that it works. However, if you’re still getting the “failed to load friends list” error after power cycling your device, keep reading.

Check your internet connection

If you don’t have a strong internet connection, you can get errors like “failed to load friends list.” To fix this, check your internet connection.

Check to see if your router is properly emitting wifi and if your PC or console is connecting to the wifi without issue. If there is an issue, turn off and on your router to reset the wifi.

I recommend running an ethernet cable from your router to your device because it’ll grant you the strongest internet connection available. If you still get the “failed to load friends list” error even with the ethernet cable connection, then you can rule out your internet as the problem.

Wait for Blizzard to fix the bug

Sometimes, the error you’re experiencing can be bigger than any potential personal device issues. It’s often that when one person experiences an abnormal error like this, everyone else is experiencing it as well. Check the Blizzard Twitter to see if they have identified an error and have announced a fix coming soon.

You can also check Down Detector, although that will only tell you if the Diablo 4 servers are down. If worst comes to worst, you might need to wait for Blizzard to fix this bug.
