During Act 3 of Baldur’s Gate 3, you find out that there’s a dragon beneath the city, so how do you find and beat Ansur the Dragon?
The Legend of Ansur isn’t just a story, it’s based on truth. Not only do you have to pass trials similar to the Gauntlet of Shar, but you have to survive and beat a ferocious beast. Here’s how to do it.
Baldur’s Gate 3: How to find Ansur the Dragon
Before we can even get close to beating Ansur, you have to actually find him. You’ll want to start at Wyrm’s Rock Fortress. At this point, I’d already dealt with Gortash, so I could easily make my way around this area. Teleport to the Wyrm’s Rock waypoint in Wyrm’s Rock Fortress, then head down the Passageway to the west.
You’ll then come across the entrance to Wyrm’s Rock Prison. Open the doors ahead, and you’ll have to fight your way through some Flaming Fist guards. This is because, as I said, I’d already fought Gortash, so they saw us immediately as enemies. At the intersection where you fight them, turn left, and you should see two Dragon Head Torches.
Activate the torches by casting any Lightning-based spells on each of them, like Witch Bolt. The entrance will suddenly appear that’ll lead you to the Wyrmway. This won’t directly lead you to Ansur the Dragon, though. You’ll need to pass four trials in four different chambers.
How to beat the Chamber of Courage in BG3
This chamber begins once you take the torch from the Balduran statue. You’ll have to essentially just survive the waves of enemies that come at you, and the game will tell you how many turns you get. It may depend on your difficulty; since on Explorer Mode I only had four to get through.
Combat will commence, and both Water and Air Myrmidons will start to spawn, attacking your party. You can simply fight your way through the hordes of Myrmidons, or there are ways to strategize your way to victory.
Make sure you have a healer or two in your party during this. Having the healer focus on keeping the party alive is all good, but you can also try the Sanctuary spell, which prevents enemies from hitting players unless you attack first. This Level 1 spell makes this Chamber easier if you have someone like Shadowheart to cast it.
How to beat the Chamber of Justice
In the Chamber of Justice, you must read the story happening in the paintings, uncover the shadows, and choose which ending fits the punishment. After taking a look at the paintings, you’ll want to head into the middle and cast Remove Curse on The Judge. This will clear them and the shadows blocking your view.
Then you need to pick the correct painting that fits the punishment that the statue is describing. You’ll want to pick up the one called ‘The Cell‘, which depicts the man being thrown in a jail cell. Select the stone altar and when it asks for you to add something from your inventory, combine it with The Cell painting.
How to beat the Chamber of Insight
This trial has you figuring out which two people have the better opinion, and who has the worst. You’ll be reading the opinions of three different people on what you should do after a war ends. To do this, make your way down the linear pathway and grab the flying books. You need to make a successful Sleight of Hand check to catch them.
After catching the three books, head down to the end where you’ll see three ghosts. They can’t speak, but you can attack any of them. The game wants you to read each of their books to figure it out. For the easy answer, you’ll want to attack Suelto because their answers are overly violent. Do this, and you’ll pass.
How to beat the Chamber of Strategy
If you’re someone who loves chess, you may enjoy this challenge, but as someone who doesn’t play it, I found this tough at first. There’s actually a way to sort of cheat, but it’s totally in the rules of the trial. The Chamber of Strategy has you at a chess board, and the Balduran statue says to take out the Purple King in two moves.
Although there is certainly a way to do this in chess, I found out a different approach. If you press the ‘T’ key on the Purple King, you’ll discover its weaknesses and resistances. It’s vulnerable to Lightning damage, which means it’ll take double the Lightning damage.
With this in mind, just have Gale or anyone else with Lightning-based spells zap the Purple King, and it’ll break. You still pass the test, since you took it out in your way.

Baldur’s Gate 3: How to beat Ansur the Dragon
Now that you’ve been able to find and pass the trials, we can teach you how to beat Ansur the Dragon in Baldur’s Gate 3. Head through the main door and face Ansur. But when you get inside, you just see bones. Interact with it, and suddenly you’re pulled into a trance, with Ansur’s soul taking over your body. After discovering that the Emperor had once killed Ansur, despite them being friends, combat ensues.
Checking his stats, Ansur is resistant to Necrotic damage (he’s undead), and also immune to Lightning and Acid, so don’t even try that. Make sure you don’t prepare those types of spells before heading inside the chamber to fight Ansur.
Now, there are many different ways you can go about this fight. Ansur has a ton of HP, and he’ll work alongside some Water Myrmidons that show up. If you have any Arrows of Dragon Slaying waiting to be used, now’s the time, since they do double damage to dragons.
Since Ansur isn’t vulnerable to anything, you just have to hit him with your strongest attacks. But Ansur will constantly use Lightning damage skills, so if you have anything like potions or gear that gives you Lightning resistance, utilize them.
Phase two of fighting Ansur the Dragon
At some point during this fight, Ansur will charge up an attack called Stormheart Nova. This will have him fly in the sky and give your party a turn to run and hide. Luckily, there are plenty of large ice shards sticking up from the ground around you.
Have your party use this turn to Dash their way behind these large pillars. Once Ansur’s turn comes around, he’ll unleash a huge attack that’ll break all the shards, but you should be safe from any damage.
Now during the second phase, Ansur will have a few Lightning strikes ready to blast the ground. You can see on the battleground where these will land, so just stay out of their radius, and you’ll be fine.
Once you finally get Ansur down to zero health, you’ll have a chance to chat with the Emperor about the new information you just learned. Don’t forget to loot Ansur’s body, as you can take Balduran’s Giantslayer, a Legendary sword! It’ll actually give you an advantage on Large, Huge, and Gargantuan creatures.
Now that you know how to find and beat Ansur the Dragon in Baldur’s Gate 3, have you figured out yet how to beat Orin the Red? That may be next on your agenda.
