How to edit appearance in Baldur’s Gate 3 (BG3)

You can swap armor and dye it colors to change your external appearance in Baldur’s Gate 3, but you can also completely edit your character’s appearance with a specific item. This specific item, called Magic Mirror, is available to everyone from the start of Baldur’s Gate 3.

Baldur’s Gate 3: How to customize appearance

Right after you finish the prologue and hit the beach, which usually takes around thirty minutes to an hour, the Magic Mirror is available to you. The Magic Mirror is the item you need to interact with to edit your character’s appearance. The Magic Mirror is always located in camp. To return to camp, press the campfire icon in the bottom right corner and select Return to Campsite.

The first thing you do in Baldur’s Gate 3 is create your character. You can and should spend time customizing your character here, but this isn’t the last time you’ll have the pleasure of engaging with character customization. The game is liberal with how often you may customize your character throughout your journey.

You don’t need to complete a quest to use the Magic Mirror or spend money to use it like you do when respeccing with Withers. It’s always available in camp, it’s free to use, and you can use it as many times as you’d like. Find it easily by looking for the Magic Mirror icon on your minimap.

What edits to your character can you make with the Magic Mirror?

With the Magic Mirror, you can’t completely reshape your character. You can change your hair, hair color, gender, scars, skin color, and much more. You can’t change your race because that is tied to your build. Also, you can’t use Origin characters on it because their physical appearances can’t be modified.

After every major fight or Act in Baldur’s Gate 3, my party and I like to go back to the Magic Mirror and slightly change our characters to accurately roleplay our story so far. My Halfing Bard started as a red-headed spry man with a goatee. Over time, he gained more scars and wrinkles and his hair grew longer.

I accepted the Illithid Powers at the end of Act 2 and my face received permanent purple veins. To better resemble the damage it had on my character, I changed the pigment of his skin to a light purple and his hair to a greyish-purple. There is, though, still a touch of orange in his hair as a reminder of who he was at the beginning.

Changing the appearance of your characters is a great way to roleplay in BG3. If you’re still making your way through Act 1, make sure you work through the Act 1 checklist so as to not miss anything.
