Elden Ring: How to back up save files

Before you mess with your Elden Ring save files, you’ll want to first back them up. This ensures that if anything goes wrong, you’ll have clean copies of your save files to use. You can back up your Elden Ring save files by going to the file directory “C:\Users\[name]\AppData\Roaming\EldenRing“.

The easiest way to access this directory is to press the “Windows” key + “R” key, then type “%appdata%” without the quotations and select “Ok”. You’ll be taken directly to your Roaming folder, and if you look around you should see the file “EldenRing.”

Once inside this folder, enter the folder with a long string of numbers (your Steam ID) and you should see two types of files: SL2 and BAK. Each save file has a .sl2 and a .sl2.bak file, so copy both of those files and paste them onto your desktop. You can now put these files in a folder somewhere on your PC. Now you can keep your save file back up in case something goes wrong.

This save editor allows you to do plenty of things, such as edit your character stats, restore deleted characters, and duplicate characters between different save files and within the same save files. You’ll first have to go to the Files tab on the Nexus Mods page and download the latest version of the program.

Once it’s downloaded, you can learn how to use this program with the helpful YouTube tutorial. You’ll start by creating a save, which will copy your current save and edit it before it puts it into your game. Make sure the program knows which save file to use by selecting the “Edit” tab, and then selecting “Change Default Directory.

You can then find your save file folder again through this directory: C:\Users\[name]\AppData\Roaming\EldenRing. In the EldenRing folder, select the folder with your Steam ID and change the directory to that folder. Anytime you want to update your edited save file to the save file in your game, right-click the save on the right side of the screen in the Save Manager and select “Update”.
