The second encounter from the Vow of the Disciple is back and the Pantheon will have you travel back to The Witch Queen days with The Caretaker. Here is how to defeat The Caretaker Raid boss encounter in Destiny 2 Pantheon.
Destiny 2: How to defeat The Caretaker in Pantheon
The fight itself is not as complicated as other raid bosses you will encounter during the coming weeks of the Pantheon. You will need to divide your six-player fireteam into duos, each of them focusing on a specific task. Your focus of this fight will be to activate Obelisks that will enable your team to deal damage to The Caretaker, eventually defeating him. Sounds simple, right? Well, let’s talk about that first.
Caretaker duo: Stun, stun, stun
The first Guardian Duo has a very simple yet important role during this encounter: distracting The Caretaker and stunning him. As any other Raid boss would do, Caretaker will almost immediately attempt to wipe out your entire team before you even get the chance to do anything by destroying the Obelisk. The Caretaker duo will bait the Caretaker so he will do his stump move on them in an attempt to stop him.
During the attack’s animation, he will be vulnerable in the face and the back, so one Guardian should be on the front and the other in the back. Shoot these weak points to stun The Caretaker so your fireteam has more time to complete their tasks.
Runner duo: Symbol rooms
The essential part of the encounter is the Obelisk and Symbol mechanic. Two of your Guardians will take turns venturing inside the various symbol rooms across The Caretaker’s boss room to collect symbols that are inscribed into the Obelisk. Once they collect them inside the rooms, they will have to return to the boss room and shoot the matching symbols inscribed in the Obelisk to activate them.
This will require a lot of communication between the Guardians for various reasons. First of all, the amount of time you get to spend inside the room will be extremely limited due to the Pervading Darkness debuff which will slowly blind you until you get 10 stacks, after which, you will die. This means that you will need to be fast and also need to take turns entering the room.
Beware of the powerful enemies inside. You will need to avoid them at all costs if you wish to complete your task. Also, you need to communicate with your partner because the doors that lead to the symbol rooms will close after some time, requiring the Guardian that stayed outside to shoot it open. Moreover, the runner should inform the other Guardian of which Symbols they picked up so that they can fire the Obelisk themselves, saving time and preventing the run from failing.
You will need to collect nine symbols to finish each stage and allow your fireteam to deal damage to The Caretaker.
Add-Clear duo: Order in the court
Finally, the simplest task of them all: add-clear. Two of your Guardians will need to focus their attention on attacking minor enemies that will overpopulate the area if left unchecked. They will have to use their heavy weaponry to allow both the Caretaker and the Runner duo to complete their tasks, and also assist them if a Guardian dies. You will also have to check if The Caretaker shoots projectiles – which can deal a decent amount of damage – and shoot them to prevent any casualties.
You will have to complete this process a total of three times. Once each floor’s Obelisk is completed, you will be able to deal as much damage as you want to The Caretaker by standing in the glowing platforms in the room.
Once you have completed the first three floors – which get increasingly difficult, especially for the Runners – then a final phase will trigger. Here, your only job will be to drain the health bar of The Caretaker with everything you’ve got – as long as you are standing in the glowing platforms, of course. If the last glowing platform closes and The Caretaker is still alive, the whole encounter will restart, so make sure to shoot him like there is no tomorrow.
