Optional objectives offer great rewards for any Helldiver brave enough to complete them. Some are more obtuse than others, so let me show you how to complete the Retrieve Mutant Larva mission in Helldivers 2.
What is the Retrieve Mutant Larva mission in Helldivers 2?
The Retrieve Mutant Larva mission is an optional objective and is exclusive to Terminid planets. Optional objectives are highlighted in blue on the map, and you can see them on the Galactic War Table before you drop.
You can see the icon for the Larva mission in the image above. Keep in mind that these optional objectives are random and aren’t guaranteed to show up. I found this objective on Socorro III, but it will likely appear on other Terminid planets, too.
Side objectives are a handy way to earn Super Credits for Premium Warbonds. Keep an eye out for unmarked tasks for a chance to line your pockets.
How to beat the Retrieve Mutant Larva optional objective in Helldivers 2
Head to the blue objective marker on your map when you land planetside. The Larva is pretty easy to miss (pictured above), and it’s marked as a “Specimen Vessel.” When you interact with the Vessel, you’ll wear it like a backpack.
Once you’ve secured the objective, you must escape with it. You can do this by extracting at the end of the mission. In my testing, the Larva doesn’t seem to prevent you from using weapons, and you can jump and dive around as normal.
Fortunately, you can’t break or destroy the Mutant Larva pod although you drop it when you die. If this happens, you can collect it off the ground, and its location is displayed on the map. The Larva also acts as a handy marker for any Samples you may have dropped.
The easiest way to complete the Retrieve Mutant Larva mission is to complete the primary objective first. Once you can call for Extraction, head to the Larva, grab it, and then head to the drop zone.
Most of the best gear in Helldivers 2 is locked behind Warbonds. Super Credits are a precious currency, so make sure you choose wisely.
