Paladins are a really cool class in Baldur’s Gate 3 because their subclasses are Oaths that can be broken if you don’t keep them. If you break your Otah, you’ll have the option to become the Oathbreaker subclass. Here is how to break every Paladin Oath in Baldur’s Gate 3.

How to become Oathbreaker in BG3
Right when you create your Paladin in Baldur’s Gate 3, you’ll choose a subclass that doubles as your Oath. The three Paladin subclass Oaths you can choose are Oath of the Ancients, Oath of Devotion, and Oath of Vengence.
You’ll know when you break your Oath because you’ll immediately have a vision where a voice tells you to meet them. Once you Long Rest, you’ll start a dialogue cinematic with the Oathbreaker Knight on the beach. He’ll ask you if you want to become Oathbreaker.
How to break Oath of the Ancients in BG3
Oath of the Ancients is all about preserving the sanctity of life and the beauty of nature. So, if you don’t protect nature, or you go out of your way to destroy nature, you’ll break your Oath.
Here are a few examples of how to break Oath of the Ancients:
- Kill the Owlbear and her cub.
- Kill the Druids and Tieflings in the Druid Grove.
- Help Mayrina revive her husband.
How to break Oath of Devotion in BG3
Oath of Devotion is the knight in shining armor Paladin subclass that focuses on honor, virtue, and protecting those who can’t protect themselves.
Here are a few examples of how to break Oath of Devotion:
- Allow Arka to kill Sazza, the caged goblin in the Emerald Grove.
- Killing enemy NPCs after convincing them not to fight.
- Torture Liam at the Shattered Sanctum.
How to break Oath of Vengence in BG3
Oath of Vengence is all about righting wrongs and delivering justice to those who have committed grievous sins.
Here are a few examples of how to break Oath of Vengence:
- Side with Nere instead of killing him.
- Free Sazza, the caged goblin in the Emerald Grove.
- Side with Minthara and attack the Druid Grove.
If you do choose to become Oathbreaker in Baldur’s Gate 3, you’ll get access to some cool stuff like Spiteful Suffering which is a spell that hits with Necrotic damage and grants you advantage, Dreadful Aspect which Frightens nearby enemies, and other great spells like Hellish Rebuke, Crown of Madness, and Inflict Wounds.
