Hogwarts Legacy lets you live your fantasy of becoming a witch or wizard. That essentially means you’d be casting spells left and right. However, some progression is required, and you do need to complete certain minigames, too. Here’s our Hogwarts Legacy guide to help you with the basic mechanics on how to unlock new spells in the game.

Hogwarts Legacy – How to unlock new spells
For the most part, you’ll unlock new spells in Hogwarts Legacy by way of campaign progression and attending classes. For instance, during the introductory chapter, your character and Professor Fig will be attacked by armored knights. You’re then prompted to use Protego as a blocking spell. This can also be used to counterattack and stun with Stupefy. In essence, these types of spells provide new actions, mechanics, or functions.
In other cases, you do need to attend classes. A couple of examples occur early in the game where you can go to your Charms class and Defense Against the Dark Arts class. The former lets you learn Accio, the summoning spell. The latter, meanwhile, teaches Levioso, which causes objects and creatures to float. Since attending both of these classes is required on your first day, you can’t miss these powers at all. Moreover, you’ll sometimes receive assignments from your teachers. These are side objectives that, once completed, can yield new abilities.
Of note is the unlock mechanic where you’ll need to complete a diagram minigame. Basically, you have to trace a pattern on your screen using the left thumbstick. At the same time, a red line will appear, which will cause the minigame to fail if it reaches your light trace. To speed up the movement of the glowing light, you’ll have to press the correct button prompts as you trace the drawing.
Once you unlock spells in Hogwarts Legacy, you can assign them to your spell wheel. This makes them swappable and accessible when needed. Other magic abilities include Lumos (i.e., create a light source), Reparo (i.e., repairs objects), Expelliarmus (i.e., disarm), Incendio (i.e., fire) and, of course, the Unforgivable Curses like Crucio and Avada Kedavra.
Hogwarts Legacy is available via Steam.
