How to Capture and Tame a Thestral in Hogwarts Legacy

The horses of death.

There are several Beasts that you can encounter in Hogwarts Legacy. One of these is the Thestral, a strange and creepy animal that resembles a winged skeletal horse. It’s said that the only people that can see them are those who’ve also seen death with their own eyes. Here’s our guide to help you capture and tame a Thestral in Hogwarts Legacy so you can place it in your Vivarium.

Hogwarts Legacy guide: How to capture and tame a Thestral Beast

To capture and tame a Hogwarts Legacy Thestral Beast, you’ll have to progress a bit further in the campaign so you can unlock the Beast taming mechanic. It requires the completion of The Elf, the Nab-Sack, and the Loom. Anyway, this Fantastic Beast can be found in two locations:

  • North Ford Bog – This is at the northern edge of the map. It’s not advisable to go there due to the distance, so it’s better if you just fly using your broom. The closest fast travel point is East North Ford Bog, though you can also use San Bakar’s Tower or others nearby.
  • Marunweem Lake – The other Hogwarts Legacy Thestral location is in Marunweem Lake. To get there, you’ll need to cut through the mountain tunnel in Coastal Cavern/Poidsear Coast. Then, continue heading east past the lake. The den is also close to where you’ll do the In the Shadow of the Mountain main quest.

Once you have the Nab-sack, you can go ahead and visit the Thestral lairs. Here are some additional tips:

  • Activate stealth mode by casting Disillusionment. This prevents animals from running away.
  • Pick a target and cast Levioso to temporarily immobilize it.
  • Cast the Nab-Sack and press the ‘F key’ whenever you see the prompt. You’ll need to do this several times, keeping the animal within range of the spell.

Anyway, if you manage to click all the button prompts, the Thestral will be pulled into your Nab-Sack. After this, just head back to the Vivarium in the Room of Requirement. Press the ‘H key’ and click on it to send it to the field. You’ll then be able to pet and feed it so it drops its unique material, the Thestral Hair.

Note that you’ll also visit an area with several Thestrals as part of The Lost Child quest. In it, you join Natty in searching for a kid. As you look for footprints, you’ll stumble upon a herd of them. Lastly, the Hogwarts Legacy Thestral Beasts that you tame in the game-world are different from the Thestral mount you’ll unlock if you have the Dark Arts Pack from the Deluxe Edition. However, the one that you do get from the Dark Arts Pack happily ends up in your Vivarium, too.
