Hogwarts Legacy guide – How to solve Charles Rookwood’s Trial puzzles in Hogwarts Legacy

The Charles Rookwood’s Trial puzzles and quest in Hogwarts Legacy become available after finishing several tasks, including The Helm of Urtkot, The Caretaker’s Lunar Lament, In the Shadow of the Estate (which eventually leads to the Crucio spell unlock), and a few odds and ends.

Once you’ve done all the objectives, talk to Professor Fig in the Map Chamber, and he’ll meet you in front of Rookwood Castle (make sure you’re tracking the quest):

  • Take out the Goblins that are guarding the outer area.
  • Cast Wingardium Leviosa to move the crate and place it under the gap on the wall. Cast Levioso on it so you can climb.
  • Defeat all the enemies in the courtyard.
  • Enter the fort and talk to the portrait of Charles Rookwood.
  • Interact with the font of Ancient Magic to get teleported to the dungeon.

Puzzle #1

Similar to an earlier main quest, the Hogwarts Legacy Charles Rookwood’s Trial puzzles all involve the Veil Portal. Basically, each room has two versions, and you’ll need to pass through the portal a few times to come up with a solution. You’ll also notice blocks/pillars that can be moved using Wingardium Leviosa.

  • Interact with the Ancient Magic font up the steps.
  • Go through the portal to remove the barrier so you can open the chest.
  • Move the block so that it’s close to the opposite edge.
  • Pass through the portal once more and climb up the pillar.

Puzzle #2

  • Go through the portal so the block to your left becomes movable. Bring it closer with your spell. Return to the portal to make the chest materialize and open it.
  • Make sure that the portal is blue, meaning the block in front of you can be moved. Cast Accio/Wingardium Leviosa to pull the block toward you and through the portal.
  • Hit the switch to change the portal’s orientation, revealing a path forward.

Puzzle #3

  • Hit the switch so the portal moves to your right, then make a manual save (this is important). You can open the chest, too.
  • Go to the right, passing through the portal as you do so. Cast Wingardium Leviosa and lift the block higher until it’s on the platform. If you make a mistake, the block will fall down the pit and you’d have to reload.
  • Pass through the portal again so you can open the chest.
  • Once more, go through the portal. Then, while you’re standing at the right-hand side, hit the switch. This will let you pass all the way to the next area.

Puzzle #4

  • This Hogwarts Legacy Charles Rookwood’s Trial puzzle has a couple of Pensieve Knight enemies, but at least one will always be invisible. That’s because you need to go through the portal to see that foe.
  • After taking out the hostiles, go behind the portal but not through it (or at least make sure it’s blue). Aim at the block and pull it through the portal. Then, place it back in its original position.
  • The reason we did this is to ensure that the block will turn into a pillar when we make the portal red.
  • Hit the switch to see if you can climb on the ledge from the pillar.
  • Once you’re up top, don’t go through the portal. Hit the switch again so the platform connects to the opposite side.

Extra chest

  • In the next area, you should see a small room to your left.
  • Look through the portal and hit the switch to make it spin.
  • Look at the portal and aim at the block once it changes forms. Pull it with Accio to drop it on the ground.
  • Go through the portal to turn it into a chest.

Another Pensieve Guardian

When you’re finished with the tasks, make your way to the large chamber. There, you’ll fight multiple suits of armor. But, due to the portal mechanic, some will be invisible until you go through. After destroying all of them, you’ll battle another Pensieve Guardian boss. The main differences here are that its phase 2 attacks (i.e., an orb with a different color and seeker projectiles) can be cast during the first phase.

Take out your foe and head to the final room with a chest. Interact with the Pensieve and watch the cutscene. This concludes the Hogwarts Legacy Charles Rookwood’s Trial puzzles and quest.
