Alohomora is a spell in Hogwarts Legacy that allows you to pick locks and access hidden areas. Unlike other skills that you need to equip and swap, it’s a built-in function and a core mechanic, though it comes mid-way through the campaign.
I wish there was an easier way to unlock Alohomora in Hogwarts Legacy, but alas, this is the only way. Whether you want to unlock Alohomora level one, two, or three, here’s our Hogwarts Legacy guide to help you get Alohomora to unlock doors in the game.
Hogwarts Legacy guide – How to get Alohomora to unlock doors and chests
First, I’ll teach you when you learn the basic Alohomora spell. After that, I’ll tell you how to get Alohomora level three and I’ll even point you to our guide to help make the process easy.
Learning the Alohomora spell
The Hogwarts Legacy Alohomora spell can unlock doors and chests, but you do need to progress further in the campaign. Basically, you’ll need to complete the Percival Rackham’s Trial quest, which will make several tasks available. One of these is called The Caretaker’s Lunar Lament, where you have to talk to Gladwin Moon. You’ll find him chilling next to the Grand Staircase Puzzle.
For me, the Gladwin Moon quest unlocked at around 10 hours. I know it’s hard, but before you get the Alohomora spell, just make a mental note of where all those locked doors and chests were.
He’ll then talk to you about Demiguise Moon Statues, and there’s one right next to him. Basically, he wants you to collect items called Demiguise Moons Statues. The quest will teach you the basics, but you need to collect around 30 Demiguise Moon Statues to unlock Alohomora level three.

Moreover, because some of these objects are behind locked doors, he’ll teach you Alohomora level one. Trace the pattern and you’ll receive the Hogwarts Legacy Alohomora spell, which is perfect for hunting those Demiguise Statues and Demiguise Moons.
Lockpicking minigame
So, how exactly do you use the Hogwarts Legacy Alohomora spell to unlock doors and chests? Well, it’s fairly simple, but the game does a terrible job of explaining it. Here’s the gist:
- There are two dials/sparks: red (inner) and green (outer).
- Red/inner dial can be rotated using the A and D keys or left analog stick.
- Green/outer dial can be rotated using the Q and E keys or right analog stick.
- The goal is to rotate one dial at a time until you see their respective gears start spinning. That means finding the sweet spot.
- Once both gears are spinning, the door or chest will magically unlock.
I really wish there was a way to automatically pick locks with Alohomora because the puzzle is surprisingly difficult and tedious to do each time. Unfortunately, you have to do the minigame every time.
Gladwin already showed you one Demiguise Statue earlier as a freebie. Two more can be found in the Faculty Wing as part of the quest. It’s a stealth section, too, so try not to get caught. When you’re done with the objectives, you can collect the other Demiguise Statues/Demiguise Moons that are elsewhere in the game world.
