Historically, Greece maintained a position of neutrality at the onset of World War II. This didn’t matter to Mussolini who invaded Albania and then Greece.

The Italians suffered catastrophic setbacks that led Mussolini to ask Hitler for help. Italian hostility and Nazi Germany’s subsequent invasion in April 1941 firmly put the Greeks in the Allied camp.

In Hearts of Iron IV: Battle for the Bosporus, Greece is given many options thanks to new National Focus Trees. Here are the main branches:

  • Bring Home the Exiled Republicans
  • The King’s Government
  • Devaluating the Drachma
  • Hellenic Armed Forces

Bring Home the Exiled Republicans

This National Focus is mutually exclusive with The King’s Government. Likewise, it branches out into multiple paths:

  • Compromise with the Monarchists – This tends to be a neutral option at the start of your Hearts of Iron IV campaign. However, much later, you’re given the option of declaring war on Turkey and reclaiming lost lands. Yes, there’s even a decision for you to “Restore the Byzantine Empire.” Looks like “Purple Rome is best Rome,” as they say.
  • Request Communist Support – This nudges Greece towards socialism and, later, the option of instituting Stalinist ideals. This also lets Greece puppet and ally with Bulgaria and Yugoslavia respectively, and the Ally Tito focus even lets you create the Corfu Cooperative faction.

The King’s Government

This National Focus is mutually exclusive with Bring Home the Exiled Republicans. Likewise, it branches out into multiple paths:

  • The Right to Rule – The next choices will have you buddying up with the United Kingdom while earning the ire of Germany.
  • Metaxism – This follows the doctrine set forth by Prime Minister Ioannis Metaxas, further militarizing Greece.

Later, you can choose between Use the Military or Recruit the Fascists. The former still has options to let you side with the old Central Powers (although Austria-Hungary or the Kaiserreich must be around to complete this), or have closer ties with the UK (joining the Allies).

As for the Recruit the Fascists focus, you can eventually side with the Axis. There are even options where Greece and Turkey coexist as part of the faction, or Greece has to subjugate Turkey.

Devaluating the Drachma and Hellenic Armed Forces

A vast majority of the options in the Devaluating the Drachma National Focus Tree boost Greece’s economic and research capabilities. The Hellenic Armed Forces, meanwhile, help improve the country’s military capabilities. These two main branches aren’t mutually exclusive with others, so you’re free to complete these to gain those perks.
