Hades‘ second area, Asphodel, was once a lush meadow that has become blackened with ash and soot due to the flames of hell. It’s also possible for you to meet up with Eurydice before facing off against the Lernaean Bone Hydra. Here’s our mini-guide to help you out.
Note: This guide is intended for Hades’ early access stage and certain mechanics may change in due course. For more information, check out our Hades guides and features hub.
Hades guide: Region II – Asphodel
The main hazard in the Asphodel region is the lava from the River Phlegethon that winds through platforms and the edges of the room.
“The floor is lava” does apply, though it’ll only do measly damage to Zagreus as long as you quickly move away. If you stay in the lava for too long, the damage will ramp up considerably.
Minibosses
The Barge of Death – This is a special encounter that takes place on a moving platform crossing the River Phlegethon. Dozens of enemies will spawn such as bombers, slam dancers, and voidstone crystals (which can make hostiles immune to damage until the crystals are killed).
Witches – Several witches will spawn in a wide room. They’ll repeatedly cast shadow flame projectiles, so many, in fact, that you’ll feel that Hades just became a “bullet hell’ game.
Megagorgon and Skullcrusher – A gigantic gorgon head will periodically cast stones that can petrify Zagreus. While you’re fighting it, a massive rock will pinpoint where you’re standing to drop down on you.
Special encounter: Eurydice
Eurydice is the second unique character that you’ll meet during your escape attempts in Hades. She’s found in one of Asphodel’s rooms.
Eurydice sings for you, and, even better, she also offers blessings that can improve the rarity of your skills:
- Ambrosia Delight – 2 random boons you have get their rarity increased.
- Pom Porridge – 4 random boons you have get their levels increased.
- Refreshing Nectar – The next 3 boons you find will have upgraded rarity.
Give her nectar when possible to earn a Keepsake. She’s also part of a favor/sidequest related to her husband, Orpheus, whom you’ll meet in the House of Hades anytime Zagreus dies (or finishes a run).
Asphodel boss fight: Lernaean Bone Hydra
You’ll do battle against the Lernaean Bone Hydra, the second boss in your Hades runs. This undead dragon will also summon a few reinforcements as you whittle down its health. Take a look at our Lernaean Bone Hydra boss fight guide if you need help with the encounter.
When you’re done, head onward to the once-majestic lands of Elysium.
Hades is available via Steam’s early access program. For more information, check out our guides and features hub.
