Hidden Path has announced today that funding for development of Defense Grid 2 has been secured, and that the title is on the way in the early half of 2014. The team previously ran a successful Kickstarter campaign to raise cash for a Defense Grid expansion pack, and this (apparently) caught the eye of some mysterious private investors.
Or as Hidden Path’s Jeff Pobst puts it: “The excitement, involvement, and passion that the community displayed around Defense Grid directly helped us engage an investment partner and make DG2 a reality.”
Co-op and competitive multiplayer modes will be included in this sequel, along with mod support for player-created stuff. The tower defense title will also feature new towers, alongside some familiar favourites. You’ll need them all to protect your power cores at “multiple locations.”
If you want to “get the latest DG2 news, have the opportunity to ask questions of the development team, and provide feedback,” then the developers suggest you sign up to their forums.
As an added bonus, the original Defense Grid is available at 75% off on Steam until 29 April.
