It’s been a while since we’ve heard anything concrete about Grand Theft Auto 6. But thanks to word from Rockstar Games insiders, we may finally have some solid information. According to a report from Bloomberg, Grand Theft Auto 6‘s release date is “two years away,” and it will feature a change in “creative direction” following changes at the studio.
The behind-the-scenes changes at Rockstar Games seem to have affected the studio’s approach to the next installment of the Grand Theft Auto series. The series is known for its satirical approach to real-world issues, and the heavy-handed way it’s approached these aspects in the past may not fly for Grand Theft Auto 6. Dan Houser’s departure in 2019 may have also led to many internal creative shifts at the company.
One of these creative changes has led to Grand Theft Auto 6 reportedly containing a female protagonist. This would be a first for a series where male characters have dominated most of the storylines. The character is Latina and will be one of a pair that’s influenced by Bonnie and Clyde. This already sounds like a fresh perspective for the series, and it’s in desperate need of one.
This report also confirms that the location will be a fictionalized version of Miami, which will seemingly be Vice City. Originally, the plan was to include large areas based on North and South America. As time went on, the developer decided to scale things back and focus on a smaller overall location. Rockstar Games will continually update Grand Theft Auto 6 by adding new missions and locations over time. Considering Rockstar Games’ support of Grand Theft Auto 5, the next installment could be a massive title sometime after its release.
A fresh Grand Theft Auto entry
The Grand Theft Auto series is one that’s in desperate need of change. Grand Theft Auto 5 is still a hugely popular game nearly a decade after its release, but the series needs to evolve. It’s still early days, but Grand Theft Auto 6 seems to be making a lot of the right moves. Moving the series beyond the streets of Los Santos and into the shoes of a female protagonist should hopefully shake things up. Grand Theft Auto 6‘s release date is still two years away, though. We’ll need to wait a while before we truly see how the game is shaping up.
