Genshin Impact Thoma guide – Talent priorities and passives
Let’s talk about Thoma’s build in Genshin Impact based on his talent priorities and passives.
Normal Attack: Swiftshatter Spear – This talent pertains to Thoma’s normal, charged, and plunging attack damage. This won’t be a priority.
Elemental Skill: Blazing Blessing – Thoma’s elemental skill causes him to do a flying kick and apply Pyro to himself. It also creates a Blazing Barrier (more on this in a while).
Elemental Burst: Crimson Ooyoroi – Thoma performs a spinning attack with his polearm, dealing AoE Pyro damage and creating a Scorching Ooyoroi.
- Scorching Ooyoroi – These look like spectral auras that surround the active character. When the active character hits with normal attacks, the aura will trigger Fiery Collapse.
- Fiery Collapse – Causes AoE Pyro damage and summons a Blazing Barrier.
- Blazing Barrier – This shield, created by the elemental skill and the proc from the burst’s aura, absorbs damage based on a percentage of Thoma’s max HP. It’ll also absorb Pyro damage 250% more effectively. Lastly, when a new Blazing Barrier is obtained, the remaining absorption will stack and its duration will be refreshed.
Ideally, we should prioritize Thoma’s elemental burst since it can provide more damage (you can even use other characters since the aura remains active). Likewise, the Blazing Barrier can be refreshed here due to Fiery Collapse procs. However, you might want to consider Thoma’s elemental skill after this. Its Blazing Barrier shield strength scaling from Thoma’s max HP is significantly higher compared to what you gain from the elemental burst.
Note: Thoma’s talents require Transcience booklets (from the Violet Court domain every Monday, Thursday, and Sunday), as well as Treasure Hoarder Insignias. Higher levels also require the Hellfire Butterfly dropped by La Signora.
Passive talents:
- Imbricated Armor – When the currently active character obtains or refreshes a Blazing Barrier, their shield strength will be increased by 5% for six seconds. This effect can stack up to five times.
- Flaming Assault – The damage of the Fiery Collapse proc from the burst is increased by 2.2% of Thoma’s max HP.
- Snap and Swing – Thoma gives a chance to give you an extra catch when you fish successfully in Inazuma.
Constellations
- C1: A Comrade’s Duty – Any character attacked while Blazing Barrier is active (except for Thoma) will lower Thoma’s elemental skill and elemental burst cooldowns by three seconds. This can only occur once every 20 seconds.
- C2: A Subordinate’s Skills – Elemental burst duration is increased by three seconds.
- C3: Fortified Resolve – +3 levels for your elemental skill; maximum level is 15.
- C4: Long-term Planning – After using his burst, Thoma restores 15 energy.
- C5: Raging Wildfire – +3 levels for your elemental burst; maximum level is 15.
- C6: Burning Heart – Whenever a Blazing Barrier is obtained or refreshed, the entire party gains +15% damage for normal, charged, and plunging attacks for six seconds.
If you don’t want to spend too much but you still want to see a few boosts for Thoma, then you can simply try to reach C1. This constellation helps lower cooldowns, which makes rotations a lot smoother if you want to maximize constant shields. However, C6 still remains the ideal stage, as that 15% increase to the party’s normal, charged, and plunging damage can last indefinitely as long as you’re refreshing the Blazing Barrier.
All right, let’s go to the next part of our Genshin Impact Thoma guide to talk about the best weapon options for him.
