The real-time strategy franchise Homeworld had all but been forgotten until the release of the land-based Homeworld: Deserts of Kharak. Now Gearbox Publishing and Blackbird Interactive have announced that there will be a third addition to the franchise coming. The team announced Homeworld 3 was in development and would be heading to the crowdfunding platform known as Fig, even if crowdfunding was simply a formality for this project. The estimated release date, though, is planned for sometime in 2022.
Dive right in
Honestly, there is far too much information to include in this single news report about the game. But, it should be known that the developers chose the Fig platform in order to bring the community as close to the dev team as possible. It should also be noted that this is indeed a “true” sequel. The story also promises to be a continuation of the events of Homeworld 2.
On the campaigns page, it notes, “Homeworld 3 is a thing! It’s already in pre-production. We want your help in building the game’s success.” There is also a ton of information surrounding the development team, particularly Blackbird Interactives founder, Rob Cunningham, who was the original Art Director for the franchise.
Already completely funded
You might be surprised (or not) to find out that Homeworld 3 has already reached its funding goal. The team at Blackbird Interactive had published its campaign on the crowdfunding site with a goal of US$1. At the time of writing this, there has been more than $338,690 pledged by 1,900+ backers. What’s even more surprising is that there are still 29 days left in the campaign. There is no doubt that fans eager to see the franchise reach its full, trilogy potential will continue to throw money at it.
Of the majority of backers, it seemed that most entered at the $50 tier. That being about the cost of a traditional retail game. This tier provides a copy of the game, access to the backer-only Discord, and early access to Homeworld 3 mobile.
Homeworld 3 has an estimated delivery of Q4 2022.
