If you’re hoping to take advantage of the free OnLive edition of Deus Ex: Human Revolution that’s being included with PC copies in the US, you should stay away from GameStop.
Beth Sharum, a PR representative for the retailer, has confirmed that GameStop employees are being told to open up copies of the game and discard the OnLive coupon.
“Square Enix packed the competitor’s coupon with our Deus Ex: Human Revolution product without our prior knowledge and we did pull and discard these coupon”, she said.
GameStop has recently announced beta testing on its own streaming service for consoles, which it hopes to introduce in 2012.
While it’s understandable that the company would be unhappy about promotions for OnLive going out through its stores, the PR response implies that retailers have some kind of say in what publishers choose to include with their boxed games (which is not really the case).
Ultimately, the only people who lose here are the GameStop customers.
